Today, the entire British Embassy staff visited the Nova festival site, Kfar Aza and Sderot, witnessing the devastating enduring impact of October 7. The memory of the victims and the resilience of the survivors will never be forgotten.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Michael Smuss, the last survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. We were honoured to host him at the Ambassador’s residence this year where his charm, wisdom and life story left a lasting impression on us all. May his memory be a blessing.

I welcome the release of hostages from Gaza this morning, including Avinatan Or, who has strong links to the UK and whose family I’ve been honoured to meet. I thank all involved for ensuring their release.

To see the hostages released today after two years of horrendous captivity is a moment of immense relief - and the release of Avinatan Or, who has British-Israeli family, is hugely welcome. We thank President Trump, Qatar, Türkiye and Egypt for their tireless mediation efforts.

I share the deep feeling of relief as hostages are released today. It is now crucial that we work together to implement President Trump’s peace plan for Gaza.

It is hard to put into words the sense of relief to see the hostages home at last and to know that the war is over. There is much to do in the weeks and months ahead to secure this peace. But for today we simply share in the joy of the families and the returned hostages.
