We conclude by offering some tentative thoughts on what a lens of border monstrosity can bring to abolitionist praxis, in particular what practical and imaginative possibilities are opened up by ‘embracing monstrosity’ 7/.

We suggest this depiction of border monstrosity gives insights into evolutions in racialised statecraft, the everyday complicity of ordinary people in this, and reveals the limits of liberal attempts to humanise monsterised subjects or reform the monstrosity of state bordering 6/.

Third, we examine how the UK state mobilises its own monstrosity and horror for border deterrence. Here, we reimagine the archetypal analogy for the state, the Leviathan, as a tentacled monster to capture its global and intimately everyday reach as well as its 'headlessness' 5/.

Second, we detail some of the ways monsterisation is applied to irregularised migrants today in UK discourse, law, and policy focusing on animalisation, zombification, criminalisation, and barbarisation 4/.

First, we situate UK bordering within a longer history in which monsterisation and mobility controls underpinned colonial formations of racial hierarchy and spatial division, showing how these persist in the governance of borders today. 3/.

In the article we use the lens of monstrosity to analyse the racialised construction and inherent violence of the UK’s (post)colonial bordering practices. 2/.
