Delighted to have this piece out with @BorderCrim on how the sea became a space of detention in Australian migration governance!

I am crushed and heartbroken to hear of Mano's death. Australia's flawed fast track process has created more than a decade of insecurity for refugees on temporary visas. This unnecessary cruelty must end #permanentvisasnow.

Australia's opaque at sea border control includes detaining people at sea. In this recent instance people were held for 18 days!.
Border Force holds suspected #asylum seeker group for over two weeks before sending back to Indonesia, authorities say via @ABCaustralia.

With Labor's disappointing position on migration, it remains "imperative that we continue our struggle against policies that divide our communities, disenfranchise, and erode the right to refuge".
Wrote a short piece for @openDemocracy on detention, migration and the UK election, fuelled by my disappointment and rage at the discussion around migration during the 'leaders debate' last week.

Fantastic update and progress. I remain hopeful that the Entry Ban and Deportation Bill won't make it through the Senate.
UPDATE: . What we’re doing together is clearly working. Aftter more than 200,000 people took a political action, such as calling their MP, it seems that the Gov doesn’t have the numbers to ram the reckless Entry Ban and Deportation Bill through the Senate - this is great news.

The violence of systems of detention and deportation impacts not only the people removed, but their families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
A tragic example of the #UK's cruel #detention and deportation system: He was granted an appeal to reunite with his family in the UK but passed away while awaiting his visa. This highlights the severe impact of Home Office incompetence on family life.

A truly fantastic presentation by @OgySimic on supporting refugee leadership and the importance of 'refugees leading the refugee movement' @ASRC1.
It was an honour to be invited to represent @ASRC1 with @janafavero at the global conference on Carcerality & Resistance in Edinbourugh, exploring immigration detention as a failed project. Fantastic to connect with scholars and advocates from around the world #DetentionFails
