#TheSmashingMachine spends a lot of time figuring out what it wants to be. Part doc, part drama, all fever dream. But once it hits its stride it slowly grabs you in, thanks to Dwayne Johnson’s subtle showing. A film with more in common with Lost in Translation than Warrior.

F1 is wonky and juiceless, minus a great last 30 that just about stops it going up in flames. I love Crofty & Martin like anyone but having them ‘voice of god’ every set piece (alongside the DTS style info dumps) takes away any emotional heft that a sports film needs to thrive.
