That is the question animating Friedrich Nietzsche's preface to an unwritten book, "Homer's Contest." Nietzsche turns to the dark Hellenic past, the "womb of Homer" for an explanation, and finds it in Strife, the double-souled goddess lauded by Hesiod.

Why was it that the Greeks, the most humane of all peoples, also possessed such a tigerish lust for blood? Why did the Greeks so delight in Homer's depiction of cruelty and death in the Iliad?

If universities want to “save the humanities”, it starts by requiring students to take mandatory Latin and ancient Greek The sciences have washout courses. The humanities should too. You’re going to get a very motivated category of student if you do this

As a Classicist, I support this. Honestly, though, requiring all students to study (at minimum) one language from the basics to the point where they can read sources in it would instantly make college a zillion times more worthwhile + improve our social discourse.

The "Classical Christian Education movement" is often criticized for naively combining two distinct traditions - traditions completely opposed to each other: the pagan classics, and Christianity.

"A command of Greek literature stamped one as a greater lover of the ancients. To be able to savor the wisdom of Plato and the poetry of Homer in the original language was the pinnacle of a man's education." P. F. Grendler, Aldus Mantius: Humanist, Teacher, and Printer (1984).

@theancientlang Basil’s engagement with Hellenic natural philosophy during his sermons on Genesis 1 (Hexaemeron) showcases his stellar educational pedigree. The text is understudied.
