It's New Year, so time to look back and forward. These are 10 things I think we need to recognise in 2026. It’s a response to what I think are profoundly damaging mistaken assumptions I’ve heard and read from practitioners, journalists, and analysts in 2025. Warning: very long🧵

An important example of our current lack of strategic thinking. US leadership in the postwar period benefited greatly from our ability to attract the best brains and provide optimal working conditions. The great poaching: America's brain drain begins

Wars are not caused by the build up of weapons. They are caused when an aggressor believes he can achieve his objectives at an acceptable price. The war of 1939 was not caused by an arms race. It sprang from a tyrant's belief that other countries lacked the means and the will to

An excellent statement from the McCain Institute, full or moral but also political clarity.

I'm glad the Biden Administration told the Italians that releasing Iranian high-tech trafficker Abedini was not okay. Releasing people complicit in killing Americans does not really win friends in Washington

President-elect already calling the foreign policy shots, seemingly blessing Italian "release" of Iran high-tech trafficker arrested at US request. Not your usual presidential transition

Raises once more the issue of what responsibility political figures, and parents generally, have for the actions of their adult children. U.S. Senator’s Son Gets 28 Years for Car Chase That Killed Sheriff’s Deputy

Ian Cramer, the 43-year-old son of Senator Kevin Cramer, Republican of North Dakota, led the police on a highway pursuit that killed a sheriff’s deputy.

The metaphor of the fox -- who knows many things -- and the hedgehog -- who knows one big thing -- may help explain the November 5 election outcome. Republican hedgehogs 1, Democratic foxes 0. https://t.co/6ZMI5XMyND

Great piece on Lebanon by veteran journalist and Middle East hand Charles Glass in December 19 New York Review of Books. Having served in Beirut in 1983-84, I appreciate how Glass stresses the agency of the Lebanese themselves. Continuities are striking. https://t.co/Yo3RCng6lN

I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul. We should take to heart these words of the Victorian poet William Ernest Henley as we face a crucial test in coming days.

There was a voter purge in Georgia. Apparently over 150,000 people. I don’t normally ask for retweets, but please make sure you check your voter registration, not just in GA, but every state! This is the way they will try and cheat. Your vote matters, make sure it counts.

Guess I’m just not up to date. Didn’t realize that “dolphin porn” was a thing. But the Republican vice presidential candidate seemingly is much more on top of the issue than I. What planet am I on?
