🚨SCOOP: For Adani projects, Gujarat govt asked Centre to delete forests earmarked for conservation under PM's pet project. Env ministry hesitated, but with twist, the job was done. I report for @reporters_co

Gujarat had initially earmarked forest areas for Modi govt's Green Credit Programme. With approvals from the Union government, the forest parcels were withdrawn from the flagship greening scheme and...

They now tout VB-GRAMG's promise of 125 days of work. But look at the average days of employment delivered per household under NREGA. @MoRD_GoI 's solution? Limit VB-GRAMG to a few centrally notified rural areas. A classic case of shrinking the denominator to inflate the numbers.

The protest at Jantar Mantar against the repeal of #MGNREGA stands cancelled cause the Police was adamant in not giving permission. 2 days to repeal a historic Act protecting the rights of 26 cr workers. But the Police need 10 days notice to protest! #SaveMGNREGA #SaveDemocracy

The same @IcfreIndia has diluted it's recommendations in contradiction of its own observation and findings to falitate Mining by #Adani in #Hasdeo Area.
15. ICFRE wrote to the ministry. It said the “situation presents a challenge" since the lands were registered for conservation. And that their "subsequent identification” for forest clearance permits “raises concerns about procedural overlap and management of such cases”.

Can India catch up with the US, Taiwan and China in the global chip race? I look at India’s multi-billion dollar semicon push for @AJEnglish to see if the country can realistically compete or if it’s carving out its own role in the global supply chain. https://t.co/tAkdnnXhsD

New 🚨 A Rajasthan judge was transferred the day he ruled against Adani-led company. His order brought rare scrutiny to one of Adani’s most contentious deals. I report: https://t.co/iBVqqCaMD4

The judgement, which was stayed by the high court, brought rare scrutiny to one of India’s most contentious mining contracts.

🚨 The Reporters' Collective @reporters_co is making the 'Gujarat Forests for Adani' papers public. Do read my colleague @tapasya_umm's thread summaring her investigation and releasing the papers. Including the ones on which we caught the Gujarat govt lying👇.
1. Thread: We are making the documents of 'Gujarat forests for Adani' investigation public. They reveal how, on Adani's 'demand', Gujarat govt asked Centre to allow potential felling of forests reserved for PM Modi's pet conservation project. And how it finally came about.

Modi government’s bill to scrap NREGA defies BJP chief ministers’ panel set up by the Prime Minister. I report: https://t.co/H2rpxIXWQZ

The bill proposes pausing rural employment work during the agricultural season, even though the CMs’ report found no adverse impact on farmer income.

29. We are making all the documents public. The documents used in the investigation and the correspondence with the Adani group, the state government, the Union government and the ICFRE are all attached at the end of story.

27. But, after 9 days of repeated reminders, all the Adani group said was, “We are unable to provide comments unless you specify the projects mentioned in the said document, which did not originate from our end, as previously requested.”

26. We shared geographical coordinates of the parcels with the company. I imagined if I a journalist could use these to trace the forests, Adani group could at least now disclose what projects they needed these forests for.

25. Adani Group's spokesperson told us he had inquired within group companies but was unable to identify matching proposals for deforestation in the specific district. On email, he turned our query around on us & asked us to share “the specific project/company and the location.”

24. We engaged with Adani group repeatedly over emails, phone calls and WhatsApp messages to get a response. We requested them to share details of projects for which Gujarat govt tried to sequester forest parcels out of the Programme.

23. ICFRE and the environment ministry did not respond to the queries we sent after completing our investigation.

22. We countered this lie by sharing Gujarat govts own letter citing Adani group's demand with Gujarat. We were showing the state govt its own records! Guess what, the state govt has not responded to us since.

21. When we mailed Gujarat our queries, it said “In July 2024, no request was made" to remove the land parcels. It added that since greening on the land parcels was funded by states, they were removed to avoid duplication of funding. This was a lie.

20. Since proposals go to states first, we contacted the state's nodal officer for the Green Credit Programme. He said the forest parcels reserved for greening had not been removed because anyone asked for it, but because they could not find any funders under the Programme.

19. Proposals for non-forestry use of forestlands need Union govt's approval, and are publicly available. We searched for Adani proposals on Union govt's online portal, but couldn't find any in the specific locations. This meant that the proposals had not reached the Union Govt.

18. We wanted to know where these forest lands were and what Adani group projects were proposed on them. We asked ICFRE for the geographical coordinates of the parcels. One of them lies 200m from Adani's Power Limited's Mundra Power Plant. Another one is 18 km from the Plant.
