Publishing @stripepress | Board @ifp + @joinFAI | Creator of TACIT, a mini-documentary series following master craftspeople at work

1/ Today @stripepress is releasing the first two mini-documentaries in a series we’re calling Tacit. They’re vignettes of craftspeople who provide a pretty compelling answer to the question, “after AI, does mastery still matter?” This episode features Christophe Laudamiel,

This framing did make me chuckle though. “Although crime itself fell sharply”…the number of arrests and tickets given increased. Well, yes! Citing and arresting offenders—truly the one weird trick of crime reduction

What’s happening in DC’s metro system is a model for the whole country — ridership is up, but crime has dropped dramatically for the most part https://t.co/E1Bz71WYwT really impressive (via @tomroussey7news)

For something very different, I’ve been working my way through Ars Technica’s War Stories series, featuring game devs talking through some of the biggest creative or technical challenges they faced when creating their game(s):

A mini-documentary capturing Dior’s preparation for his AW 1949 couture show:
Obsessed with this mini-documentary of Christian Dior (+ 700 seamstresses!) making his Autumn/Winter 1949 haute couture collection. Just a really remarkable window into craft: https://t.co/nHzjbGotY3

My Tacit bibliography is full of some of my favorite examples of work in progress/interesting accounts of expertise. I’ll keep sharing my individual favorites, it’s but worth a scan if that’s your jam! It’s a living list, so we’ll keep adding to it https://t.co/Rn2q2AZ0zl
@_TamaraWinter Got it - thanks for the rec! If you have the time, a larger list of such work would be quite useful. The volumes of Paris Review Interviews come to mind.

My favorite book about YSL (so far)
New bar for calling yourself high-agency: successfully taking over the biggest luxury fashion brand in the world after the untimely death its founder…at the ripe age of 21. (This book, a kind of dual biography of Yves Saint Laurent + Karl Lagerfeld, is excellent.)

Some extra context that makes this more amazing: Saint Laurent became head designer at Dior when he was 21. He made this dress when he was 23, and then founded YSL two years later.
Audrey Hepburn wearing Yves Saint Laurent’s haute couture dress made for Christian Dior 1959 collection, when Yves was working at Dior.

I've been (half) joking with friends recently that what people think is the “rise of storytelling as a craft in tech” is actually the output of the same few (mostly) women, who just are just really, really good at what they do. @zebriez is one of them, and this convo was a treat
Ep. 35: Brie Wolfson - Loving Attention & Ease in Craft @zebriez is something of a marketing and culture wizard, and has helped some of the most incredible companies and leaders in Silicon Valley by amplifying what is true and unique about them. That includes @cursor_ai and

Which is to say…we (I) want to see more work in progress! The value of sketches and documenting your process is only going to increase. It’s proof of (human) life.

I love that Moss included a ton of sketches, some of which are totally illegible. These four are of “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold” (Gay Talese); “Song” (Louise Glück); the book proposal for Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat (Samin Nosrat); and “Not Getting Married Today” (Stephen Sondheim)

This, by the way, is why The Work of Art by Adam Moss (the genius longtime editor of New York Magazine) is one of my favorite books ever. Anyone who loves non-fluffy accounts of the creative process should read it. 40+ interviews and tons of notes/ sketches with Gay Talese,
One potential upside of AI allegations: we might see a lot more work-in-progress, esp from creatives. More sketches, more unfinished work, and, eventually, a richer public record of how things are actually made. I think that would be a very good thing.

We’re entering the age of AI slop that people believe en masse. This post is 100% fake and probably AI generated. All made up. Yet massive number of upvotes, views and shares. Journalist @CaseyNewton got in touch with the “whistleblower.” The guy faked all “evidence” with AI…

Dream job for the right person! Happy to refer anyone who seems like a stellar candidate—it’s a really great time to join this team.
I'm hiring another editor to join @IFP's editorial team. I think it'll be hard to fill this role, for a few reasons (no particular order):
