We found a note Antonio Jr., the slain 16-year-old, left for his dad before he came to CHOP. “I am fighting for a cause," he wrote. "One day I want my sister to live in a world where her skin won’t be the cause of any pain for her physically or emotionaly.”

To be clear, I think these reporters did a great job and there should be more coverage of this issue! But the Seattle part is not new news -- and local reporting by local outlets matters.

The Seattle Times did this story in 2020. ST's headline: "When Seattle stores belongings taken during homeless cleanups, few get them back." We also did a breakdown of everything the city takes from homeless people. Link would have been nice!

Outreach workers are concerned that few people are able to retrieve medication, medical devices and IDs that go missing during encampment clean-ups.
“To go through all that trouble to get my stuff back and then to have nothing that I needed there … it was traumatizing all in itself. It was heartbreaking. It felt like losing everything all over again,” said one person living unhoused in Portland.
