🧡1/ With the ink now dry, I’m honored to share that I have been selected as the 2025-26 @APA Jacquelin Goldman Congressional Fellow, funded by the @AmPsychFdn. This opportunity represents a unique intersection of my passionsβ€”psychology, policy, and advocacy for children/fams.

4/ As I prepare for this next step, I’m eager to learn, collaborate, and help bridge the gap between psychological science and public policy to drive meaningful change. If you’re working at the intersection of psychological science and policy, I’d love to hear from you!.

7/ Takeaway: The context of childhood violence matters. Out-group violence may reinforce biases re: out-group danger and in-group safety, but deviations from this pattern (e.g., favoring the out-group) may increase risk for substance use (e.g., risk-taking behavior).

6/ What about explicit biases? No differences! This suggests these effects are happening below the level of conscious awarenessβ€”highlighting how early experiences shape implicit social processing even into young adulthood in ways we may not even realize.

5/ Moreover, the connection between childhood violence and alcohol use sxs was mediated by implicit bias ONLY among those who experienced out-group violence (i.e., those who experienced out-group threat but still implicitly favored the out-group reported elevated alcohol use).

4/ Why does this matter? Stronger implicit in-group favoritism may be a protective response promoting safety-seeking and connection after out-group harm. In contrast, weaker in-group favoritism/out-group favoritism was linked to greater alcohol use disorder (AUD) sxs.

3/ Using a minimal group paradigm & implicit association test, we examined these associations among 455 young adults (18-25). Those who experienced out-group violence had stronger implicit in-group favoritism. Those who experienced in-group violence? No significant change.

2/ Humans naturally favor their in-group over out-groups. But what happens when childhood violence comes from an in-group (family) vs. an out-group member (non-family)? We examined how these experiences shape implicit biases for novel groups and mental health in young adulthood.

🧡 1/ New study alert! We explored how childhood violence exposure shapes implicit social biases for novel groups and mental health in young adults. Does it matter who the perpetrator was? Turns out, yes. Let’s dive in! πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡. (pre-print: .

2.5 years ago I discovered that I was excluded from our graduate union (@hgsuuaw) because as a student I was "learning" not "working." I filed a grievance that Harvard University denied. We took the case to arbitration. Today, we won. Unions work! #AcademicChatter

Really appreciate the outpouring of love and perspective πŸ‘πŸ½. I think what is oft left out of this convo is how hard queer people have had to (and still have to) fight to live loud. I came out at 14. I’ve been out longer than not at 30 yo. And I refuse to water myself down.

As a queer-identifying academic intentional about embodying queerness, I sometimes feel like academia doesn't want (or isn't ready for) me. To queer-identifying academics in my network, has academia made you feel like "too much"? How do you navigate authenticity? #AcademicChatter.
