2.5 years ago I discovered that I was excluded from our graduate union (@hgsuuaw) because as a student I was "learning" not "working." I filed a grievance that Harvard University denied. We took the case to arbitration. Today, we won. Unions work! #AcademicChatter

Workers are struggling to get by in Boston especially with the high cost of living. Right now, graduate workers are facing displacement. But these workers are not alone in their fight -- we know that our solidarity in the labor movement is what makes us strong.

We stand with our siblings in HURA fighting for a brighter future, and we’re putting Harvard on notice (again). Email and call the following admins to let them know union busting is disgusting, and we will not tolerate this attempt to subvert a fair election process.

This time, they’re retaining counsel from Seyfarth Shaw, a firm well known for their aggressive anti-union campaigns. Workers are experiencing captive audience meetings, being sent FAQs full of misleading questions and answers, and receiving emails from upper admin almost daily.

Our colleagues with @HarvardResAdvisors are voting for their union April 19, 23, and 24. Harvard is aggressively pushing an anti-union campaign full of lies and deceit to scare workers into voting no.

6/7 Harvard has divested before & can/must divest again. We reiterate our membership’s call on Harvard to conduct an inquiry into & public disclosure of its investments in companies profiting from Israel’s destruction of Gaza & occupation of Palestine & immediately divest.

5/7 In 1990, Harvard divested from tobacco stocks. In 2014, the University became the first U.S. endowment fund to sign the UN Principles for Responsible Investment. In 2021, Harvard divested from the fossil fuel industry, opting instead for a net-zero investment platform.

4/7 In 1986, following a years-long community campaign, the University conducted an inquiry into its investments in apartheid South Africa, subsequently carrying out a “selective divestment” from companies selling products to the South African military.

3/7 The Harvard Management Company (HMC) stresses its “responsible” investment approach, “integrating environmental, social, and governance factors in the investment process.” This approach has led the University to divest from a number of sectors and companies over the years.

The HGSU-BDS caucus of rank and file members put forth the motion, now signed by 300+ Harvard students, faculty, staff, alumni, & organizations who share our union’s concern over Harvard’s documented ties to companies & institutions involved in the attacks in Gaza.

Last month, HGSU general membership endorsed a letter calling for Harvard to divest from holdings that materially implicate the University in the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the ongoing destruction of Gaza, & to publicly disclose the full extent of its investments🧵
