But there's no reason to panic yet. The Ohio samples were collected last winter. We don't know if these viruses have continued to transmit in deer and establish permanently. New surveillance from this past fall will determine this in short order.

Not only were the deer in Ohio infected at very high rates (35% by PCR) but deer in Iowa had similarly high rates. Humans are likely spreading SARS-CoV-2 to deer across the US.

It could be a big problem if SARS-CoV-2 became established in a non-human host. New variants could evolve that later spill back into humans. This happens with influenza regularly. It may have happened with omicron (we'll likely never know for certain).

Yes and no. This is a big wakeup call that we have not been monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in animals intensively enough. Livestock and zoo animals are well monitored but urban wildlife (deer, rodents, etc.) are not. It's a big black box.

In our new @Nature paper Andrew Bowman and @OSUVetCollege colleagues find high rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Ohio's white-tailed deer and evidence of human-to-deer and deer-to-deer transmission. Should we panic?

A @Nature paper reports the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in more than 35% of 360 white-tailed deer tested in northeast Ohio. At least three viral lineages from humans were found in the animals alongside evidence of deer-to-deer transmission. https://t.co/BO74V38AYV

Given enormous public confusion about COVID-19 origins, I thought we could use a dose of perspective by turning back the clock to 2009 and telling the little-known story of how the origins of the "swine flu" pandemic were unraveled over 7 years.

Fascinating exploration of how China's devastating ASF outbreak spiked pork prices, potentially driving people towards alternate wildlife food sources and increasing the risk of zoonotic spillover.

Extraordinary results require extraordinary proof. This has been the mantra of #ancientDNA research since the 1990s, where contamination is a major source of error. The problems that @MichaelWorobey cites in this thread are well known to us in ancient DNA. Worth a read.

I was a blissfully happy scientist for a decade. Then I became a mom and things took a turn. Then the pandemic hit and it got worse. Here's how I survived.
