I think the blank ‘Goals’ page worked better and they could choose a couple from a suggested list and update as they went through the term.

I always disliked full-on ‘book review’ tasks but loved designing Reading Journals which I could quickly check. I made termly A5 booklets where students could make weekly reflections and ‘magpie’ words. Anything else was an optional extra but I looked forward to checking these!

Spent whole career encouraging independent was yrs before I started reading MG/YA fiction for myself: that’s when everything clicked & genuine conversations and book swapping happened with students.Seems obvious but taking time to enjoy books is important!.

Supporting KS5 students to independently read set texts can be tough. Chapter summaries for Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Can assign Qs to diff students/ask to make own annotations/links to themes/cross-refs etc These were stuck in their texts Phase dividers #litdrive #Tess #AqaLitB

Another ‘sketchy’ resource found while my kids were looking for A3 paper to doodle on earlier 😂 A revision aid for Phase 1 of Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Fill in details/quotations for each main event, return to the text to fill in those gaps #litdrive #teamenglish #tess #AQALitB

A timeline’ of Shakespeare’s life I used to intro him to KS3. This contains the bare facts/evidence for him so that they have confidence forming their own opinion of his writing. They’d follow a ppt ‘lecture’ I’d give with photos & map key facts onto this as they listened.

Macbeth & structure: I printed these out, students chose a Q, found a partner to work with to write their answer. Stuck both parts onto a folded card and placed on a ‘timeline’ of the play, so written answers could be read under the Q flap. #teamenglish #litdrive #macbeth

Just sharing a couple of resources that encouraged students to think about the structure/staging of lit texts. First up: ‘An Inspector Calls’.#teamenglish #litdrive #AIC

Students never noticed that the basic essential ‘ingredients’ (egg, flour) were on the ‘verb&noun’ side of the paper and the ‘decorative touches’ of adjectives and adverbs were on the right side of the page. I enjoyed making it make sense for myself :).

In the last weeks of the yr, I always returned to looking at how grammar instruction could be improved. I know frequent, low-stakes exercises tied in with SoL is key but, my goodness… it never is a ‘done’ thing, is it!? Sharing my poster here. #SPaG #teamenglish #litdrive

Exploring the impact of sentence stems, playing with them in different contexts, changing them to see where the power lies - but always alert to the danger of adding more ‘tick lists’ to the English classroom. So helpful & generous @mrsmacteach33!.

🧵It was a wonderful experience to speak at #LitdriveCPD25 @LitdriveUK on Saturday, about using a sentence level approach to develop students’ writing. But as I made clear, I wasn’t just talking about improving writing; I was talking about improving thinking. 1/9

Final ones of the subject knowledge poster ‘set’! I’m sure other schools and depts have defined in their own way but am sharing in case someone finds them helpful. @DavidDidau @MrWiseCHS

The top ‘white’ layer is to concentrate on with yr7, the middle layer with yr8 and the darkest coloured layer kept for yr9. #litdrive #teamenglish.

‘The Trouble with English’ by Sam Gibbs & @z_helman was a big help when trying to condense down the subject concepts I think KS3 students needed to grasp, rather than just thinking they’ve learned about separate texts. Here are the first 3 of 5 subject knowledge posters I made:

Teaching an English exam board in Wales at a time when the CfW was being rolled-out meant I could see the diverging pathways really clearly. The task of defining the ‘knowledge’ of such a slippery subject as English was a difficult one but I really enjoyed jumping into it!.

I’m going to post English teaching resources I created a while back to return the favour to all those lovely teachers who share their booklets and SoW on here. First up, a visual summary of Macbeth (best printed as A3!) #litdrive #teamenglish

Just returning to this place after deleting my account over a year ago. Glad to see so many teachers are still active and sharing and I can jump back in to catch-up! :).
