Telling people to use their best judgement, even to default to silence "when in doubt", is risky business. It makes your community unpredictable, which--for many people--equates to unsafe. (It's also passing up a pretty low-effort opportunity to lead.).

Even for those top-percentile total comp employers, competing *with each other* in this way would be great to see more of. E.g. @AnthropicAI is pushing the envelope a bit.

Thanks @YourFondestLove for the callout. I would love to play any small part in raising the bar for how our field hires people. Especially for companies who can't compete on massive total comp + liquidity, being able to differentiate in this way is valuable.

I've used this approach (detailed, earnest job postings) for our last 4 hirings, and it feels like a superpower. E.g. the response rate to my cold sourcing skyrocketed. Lots more replies like, "I'm not a actively looking right now but. " (We hired one of them.) 🧵.
I feel this is a new standard for Engineering Management job postings. The time and care provided in this by @sumeetjain provides SUCH a beautiful and clear signal of what they're looking for. And (more importantly?) who they are, and how they work.

"There is a mistaken belief that meritocracy somehow conflicts with diversity." . Why did you frame your hiring policy, and name it "MEI" (a clear evocation of "DEI") if not to put meritocracy and diversity at odds with each other in the minds of readers and your employees?.
Today we’ve formalized an important hiring policy at Scale. We hire for MEI: merit, excellence, and intelligence. This is the email I’ve shared with our @scale_AI team. ———————————————————. MERITOCRACY AT SCALE. In the wake of our fundraise, I’ve been getting a lot of questions.

📣 Pre-hiring announcement! I'm looking for Rubyists or Ruby-curious developers to join my distributed team at Stripe. We build software to help our customers and also our internal teams deal with the rare occasion when Stripe systems aren't working as intended.
