I do wonder how well "distance to nearest motorway junction" correlates with "liklihood of voting reform/brexit".
The lack of motorway in the UK compared to countries like France, Germany, or even the Netherlands is pathetic and no doubt contributes to our chronic productivity crisis.

Ipswich used to have an "Art School" partly funded by central government, and partly by local. One of the ways it was funded was local government would commission art and sculpture from it, for offices, parks, schools etc. achieving that "localized intellectual tradition".
I'm currently staying in a Yorkshire city and the cultural and social capital is non-existent here. There seems to be no institutions that cultivate a localised intellectual tradition. This isn't good enough. There is a difference between surviving and flourishing.
