and as a fandom nerd type, it’s kind of shocking to me how many people just don’t bother to skim articles/interviews for media they’re obsessively interested it in order to try to glean authorial intent. I even did this as a teen!.

I also think a lot of people just don’t want to bother looking for context before they react to a movie/book that is yet to be released. you can google info about mccurdy if you’re unfamiliar with her. you can read the vogue article where she’s interviewed about this book.
Or they need to be spoon fed giant blaring signals that what is being depicted is “bad, actually” like…enough already. It’s all so infantilizing.
