A female Phronima sedentaria - ‘monster in a barrel’ - on Scilly today! An amphipod crustacean, she parasitises salps, devouring them from the inside, forming a vessel to raise her young! These incredible creatures were the inspiration behind Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien 👽

MY WIFE JUST FOUND A MYRTLE WARBLER ON SCILLY! 😃💥 She phoned me at work to say she had a bird she didn’t recognise. I went to look & found this!!! She was rockpooling with the kids by this point & I shouted to her “You’ve found a Myrtle warbler!” She replied “Is that good?” 💛

The walrus made its way around the bay trying unsuccessfully to board each of the 20 or so anchored yachts - felt slightly concerned it was going to hop on the kayak but thankfully it decided against it!! Nonetheless, my heart was in my throat! Unreal! #Wally #ScillyWalrus

The lack of visitors to Scilly has allowed Porthcressa Beach to flourish. Whilst tourists may favour ‘pristine’ sandy beaches, I think this explosion of sea rocket, sea beet, and rock samphire is far more impressive, providing some great habitat for local and migrant birds!

Violet sea snails (Janthina janthina) on Scilly today - ten found on a quick check of Town Beach at lunchtime! The rare arrival of this tropical water mollusc coincides with a big offshore movement of their prey, by-the-wind sailors, at the end of last week! Magic!! 🌊🐌🟣

After nearly a month with little activity from the west, this spanking grey-cheeked thrush at the bottom of Rocky Hill Lane is hopefully just a precursor for the week of late transatlantic promise that lies ahead 🌬️ #ScillyBirds

CLIFF SWALLOW❗️tearing up and down Porthcressa for a few minutes before drifting away over Buzza Hill… but not before sneaking on to the house list by the skin of it’s beak! A massive yank mega adrenaline hit courtesy of the ever-awesome Ren Hathway 🙌 #ScillyBirds

I wasn’t overly optimistic of seeing the Swainson’s when we arrived to be told it has disappeared in to this shit-show! But fear not, it eventually returned to the original garden & performed exquisitely! A point-blank wryneck on the way to the pub for bonus points! #ScillyBirds

The first south easterlies of the autumn delivered this divine milky-tea booted warbler to Higher Moors this morning, the first on Scilly since 2014! Another top find by @scillywebb #ScillyBirds

Yesterday marked our fifth anniversary of moving to these magical isles, & what a way to celebrate! 🙌 Scilly’s fifth lesser kestrel but only the third ‘modern’ record following individuals in 2002 & 2020! Spring 2023 is off to a flyer 💥 #ScillyBirds

Sheer panic today after @sqiudeater messaged saying he had a lesser kestrel at PH Down!! Unfortunately it coincided with my little lad’s 5th Bday party, which I was half an hour late to 😬😆 Hoping to show him the bird tomorrow in less stressful circumstances!! #ScillyBirds

Incredibly, despite the terrible condition it was in yesterday, the juv. merlin was still alive this morning and is doing surprisingly well after taking in some food… perched up, alert, and stretching its wings. Hopefully I can provide more positive updates through the week 🤞

Sad to see this magnificent juvenile merlin in such a sorry state on Porthmellon Beach today. The problem wasn’t obvious - bird was thin and dehydrated. Now with the island vet having had some fluids, & food on it’s way. Thank you @JABBIRDART & @LucyMcRobert1 for assistance 🤞

Superb Desertas petrel found by @anthonysbirds on today’s outstanding @Scillypelagics ! Many 100s of Cory’s, greats & sooties gave a mind blowing display before this caught us all off guard! Frustratingly seen by only a few as it went through as quickly as it arrived! #ScillyBirds

A truly outrageous weekend of pelagic seabirding off Scilly was taken to the next level last night with this South Polar Skua! Huge admiration, credit, & thanks to Bob for calmly & expertly addressing the ID of this bird! 🙌 @Scillypelagics just keep getting better & better! 🌊

A curlew sandpiper at Porth Mellon beach this afternoon was a very welcome Scilly tick (thanks @IWTScilly !!). It’s the first one on the islands since autumn 2017 and the first spring record for ten years! Such a classy little wader 🤩 #ScillyBirds

Despite the abundance of scarcer seabirds... storm-petrels were once again my weekend highlight! These three sea-sprites were the first sitting ‘flock’ of stormies I’ve seen... a very evocative sight! #ScillyPelagics

Immensely hyped to find a monarch gliding in-off at Peninnis Lighthouse this afternoon! Very mobile in warm 40mph westerlies, but enjoyed gorgeous views for c.15 seconds! Very much a ‘dream come true’ moment to find my first British one on patch 😃🙌 #ScillyButterflies

As we move through August we start to see more variety at sea, which can often include a good arrival of Sabine’s gulls as they head south post-breeding. We enjoyed 13 of these striking small gulls over the weekend, some of which performed impeccably! #ScillyPelagics
