Here at phd_stipend we're trying to figure out which platform to move to is the most effective. Our surveys and forms continue to be available on our Linktree, and you can continue to share them with others via other platforms.

Whilst PhD students don't get debt added to their HECS, many PhD students have debt from undergraduate and Masters degrees. During our candidate we don't pay back our HECS debt (due to low stipends... duh) and our HECS debts just continue to increase. 🤷♀️

This is so important!
DO interview your potential advisor if you apply for a PhD or postdoc. This can save you years of pain, lost dreams and wasted time. ❗ Most students are focused on receiving the offer. But this is the biggest mistake one can make when looking for a position. ▫️ NOT every lab

So where to with this #stipend conversation: the current financial experience of undertaking a PhD in Australia based on evidence & the collection of personal views seems like there is an urgent need for change. If we value the floppy hat as much as we seem to we need change.

Many students in last years stipend survey reported that they forgo healthcare due to the low stipend. Some students simply cannot afford regular healthcare. #RaiseTheStipend
A rise in the number of young people without a regular GP has health experts concerned it could leave them at higher risk of developing chronic health conditions later in life.

The financial hardship of doing a PhD is a significant burden, on top of any other stressors caused by doing a PhD. So many leave or don't even do a PhD due to the lack of financial support.
@arandonaut @DrShaneRRR @ARC_Tracker I understand completely! I'm going through significant financial hardship and am considering leaving the PhD after 7 months in because of this. I hadn't realized the financial struggle was this real in Tasmania. Incredible!

A petition is being circulated for signatures to Parliament to increase the minimum commonwealth-funded research stipend for PhD's to align with minimum wage. A game changer for us with mortgages and producing meaningful research! https://t.co/s3dGuStY03

I wanna encourage everyone to sign this petition asking the Federal government to raise the minimum rate of the Ph.D. stipend to $39.000 per year, thereby matching the minimum wage. @stipend_tracker
