We found that by adding modularity, and hardware-centric design it can help lower the costs of these systems.

Low-cost SDLs can serve as a fast low risk prototyping platform and/or as great tools for education! We can really inspire the next generation with cheap robotics which are used in novel, multidisciplinary fashion!.
