"More than 30 people in formerly CKO-managed buildings have united to make numerous demands of the company and new property manager PIP, organizers said. They include: - Money to help with moving costs. - Assurances that PIP will let tenants break their leases without penalty

“No one should have to live like this — no hot water, no heat and [sewage] issues,” Jones said outside her former building Monday. “[CKO] has been, in my opinion, the property management company from hell. They have not helped tenants.”

"CKO Real Estate left residents “in the dark” following a February fire at one property and months of devolving living conditions at others; now, tenants are demanding rent reimbursements, moving assistance and an end to their leases without penalty."

Even when he knew he had only months left to live, he found joy in the fight for a better world. He was always upbeat, laser-focused on what needed to be done, and ready to offer a hand so we could do it together. Rest in Power Kowboy! We miss you, we love you. Him last month:

Kowboy helped build the Mental Health Movement, and he was a member of @CCWchicago, the coalition for #TreatmentNotTrauma. It is fitting that two weeks before he passed, he got to see the Roseland Clinic – the very clinic he chained himself to – finally re-opened.

Kowboy understood our clinic fight immediately. In 2016, when Rahm Emanuel closed the Roseland Mental Health Clinic, Kowboy was quick to put his body on the line. He chained himself to the clinic in protest, to build power for the day when we would have the power to re-open it.

In 2011, when Rahm Emanuel announced the closing of the Woodlawn Mental Health Clinic, we began to fan out into the community to organize opposition to the closing. When someone knocked on the doors of nursing-home residents, everyone said: you gotta talk to Kowboy.

Here's how we met Kowboy. After years as a bus driver and EMT, he suffered a health condition that found him in a Woodlawn nursing home, where he faced abuse and neglect. He fought his way to recovery and organized his fellow residents to demand that they be treated with dignity.

Last Thursday, Southside Together and the social-justice movement in Chicago lost a giant: Ronald “Kowboy” Jackson. Even if you didn’t meet him, if you have been on a march in the last decade and a half, you have seen him or heard his voice through one of his several bullhorns.

Matter of fact, y'all know of any trusted people and organizations, domestically and internationally doing the work, put them in this post. Help them out with amplification and gaining new people to assist and recruit.

Yesterday we woke up to a new reality. In the years ahead, we'll face fiercer attacks on our communities. Here's another opportunity to process the election, at 7pm with @WorkingFamilies: https://t.co/R3pz3rzf7x And here are a few more thoughts from us:

The road ahead was already difficult, and now it will be harder. Still, there are some silver linings. Our coalition's referendum on the South Shore CBA ordinance won by nearly 90%.
