The Srivastava Lab thinks about food webs, diversity, space, predation, coexistence, dispersal, conservation, elements, and traits...and we love bromeliads!

Goodbye Twitter. You were a good friend over the pandemic, but then it all went south a couple years ago. And now, well I hardly have words for it. I’ve got a new life over at https://t.co/UVeNI6QbHg This post will self destruct in one week.

…using paraffin wax to coat the trichomes on the submerged portion of the bromeliad leaves. Turns out that bromeliads compete for nutrients with algae, benefiting bacteria. This pushes the ecosystem to be more brown than green. Full details here:

…while we knew bromeliads benefited from microbes, it wasn’t clear how microbes were affected by bromeliads’ uptake of nutrients. The only way to figure this out was to stop nutrient uptake, and my PhD student Pierre Rogy figured out how…

We’ve just solved another bromeliad mystery! In previous research, my group and others have shown that some bromeliads collect water between their leaves in order to get nutrients from detritus that microbes and aquatic insects breakdown. But…

Anyone able to offer an online Java course, in English, free to a Ukrainian refugee? Yulia was a hydrologist in Ukraine until she had to flee. She is now cleaning houses to get by as she tries to teach herself Java, but needs a proper course. Please RT.

Does it not seem extraordinary that someone appointed to point out systematic racism could possibly be criticized for previously pointing out systemic racism?

👇Animal Functional Traits SF👇 🌷By comparing aquatic fauna in bromeliads from 26 different Neotropical sites, @srivastavalab's study showed that biogeography and climate structure the way animal community traits change over environmental gradients 📙 https://t.co/ZSndRnZ68L

Calling all (Canadian) data custodians! Do you have eco/evo data with a broad temporal or geographic extent? Is your data of high cultural or societal value? Is your data at risk of extinction, e.g. you’re retiring soon? The Living Data Project can help! (1/4)

Isn’t it time we stopped referring to postdocs as postdoctoral “fellows”. The word fellow has multiple meanings but because one commonly understood meaning is “man”, it cannot be considered a gender neutral term. I suggest “postdoctoral researcher” instead. Fin.
