She was born face-first into the world (first time the doctors at the hospital had seen a ‘face presentation’). Bruised, yet already a warrior, all the staff came to check out this miracle baby as she sat jaundiced under the bilirubin lights.

For many months we were faced with the unknown. Was it Maya's complicated labor/delivery that caused these issues? Did we feed her the wrong foods/formula? Was it brain damage? Ever since her birth Alex, especially, knew something was different. call it Mum's intuition.

We were truly devastated with the diagnosis, as Rett is quite severe. We cried, grieved as in a loss, and tried to research as much as we could to better understand Rett - all the while doing the day-to-day routine with Maya.

Maya+Rett: The full exome genetic test results came back in late Aug. The geneticists & neurologist conference called us to give us the news. Rett Syndrome is a fluke mutation & is generally non-inherited. The chances are ~1/12,000. Help find a cure:

Went thru 3 different anticonvulsant meds before we found something that settled OK with her. 1st had her up for 3-4 hrs every night, 2nd took away her appetite and changed her vision, and this 3rd is working for now-probably need to increase it if/when her seizures come in full.

Maya+Rett story: The EEG results came in & the neurologist told us that it was highly abnormal and suggestive of epilepsy. We don’t know when they will start “in full”, but we suspect we have seen her have some ‘smaller’ episodes already. Help find a cure:
