Democrats have won the popular vote in 7 of the last 8 presidential elections. That’s never happened before in US history. Maybe the problem is not that Democrats are out of touch with ordinary Americans but rather that America has a terribly unrepresentative political system

As new farming and ranching states opened up in the great plains
@USDA
went to great pains to ensure that "forty acres and a mule" always excluded the Black farmer and rancher. Hence Trump's map that extends north west of the Confederacy.

Duh. And the pop vote margin will grow when all the mail-in ballots from NY, CA, MA, CT, et al, are finally counted. Biden will finish with at least a 5 million vote plurality (52%) & will have received, by far, more votes than any candidate in history.
@speechboy71
Yeah, but I think they’re pretty out of touch too. What works at CNN and Ivy League Universities and New York City does not appeal to “the heartland” and we better start figuring that out like we swore we would 4 years ago.
@speechboy71
@sleary
Given the narrowness of this win during the midst of *gestures around at everything* I'd say it's both.
This election should / could have been a slam dunk for the Dems

@JoJoFromJerz
Both sides need to get better at talking and listening to each other. As long as we continue to talk last each other there is only one winner and he lives in the Kremlin.

@JillFilipovic
If the system for President and Senate wasn’t so unrepresentative, we’d be arguing about Left-Center politics versus Progressivism. Not Fascism versus democracy.
@speechboy71
We have three branches of government. 1 is elected by popular vote (legislative), 1 by electoral college (executive), and those two combine to appoint and confirm the 3rd. It's balanced and prevents tyranny of the majority.
@speechboy71
@JillFilipovic
We are the only country on earth with an electoral college, it is the literal embodiment of what people mean when they say structural racism, it was created to appease slave holders in the south and continues to be used to thwart the will of the people

Do not discount or ignore the plain fact that, notwithstanding all the harm he has done, 67,000,000+ people voted to keep trump in office. Unrepresentative system or not, normal, sane, law abiding, sympathetic people have to acknowledge many citizens have deep problems.
