Policy makers have ignored the evidence locking up children and criminalising their behaviour doesn’t work, we need to invest in prevention and inclusion in health, education and social services. Accountability is needed - across layers of govt - not federal or state issue alone.

The children who have no one are the most vulnerable - often with mental health issues, substance addictions, early disengagement from education, experience of poverty and food insecurity. We have let these children down - waiting for someone to turn up.

Rare positive stories from young people who have someone to show up for them - a relative or coach or carer - to provide help to get off the train from juvenile justice to adult prison.

“An epidemic of unmet need” leads to children being locked out of social support systems and education. We are traumatising and retraumatising children locking them in youth detention facilities that are not equipped to care for children or educate young people.
