NEW: This time last year, something *big* roared in Greenlandâand the entire world shook for nine days. It wasn't an earthquake, eruption, or explosion, or impact. Scientists - with the help of the Danish military - have now found out. Me @QuantaMagazine

A new study says the Red Planet is hit by meteorites more often than we thought, altering our age models. New research by @NataliaWojcicka and others, comments by @space_quakes & Simone Marchi @SwRI, story by @astro_jonny.

On February 20th, before the JHU postdoc union @hopkinspro_uaw went public, I had the honor of speaking representing postdocs at @TRUhopkins's picket that led to a successful bargaining agreement for grad workers. Now, it is the time for postdoc workers! https://t.co/x373HfRUXc

Great article from @michaelgreshko on VIPERâs cancellation in @sciam today!
Via @sciam: NASA seeks to cancel VIPER, a potentially revolutionary lunar rover. Instead, the agency now plans to launch literal deadweight in its place, for a total cost of about $800 million. Scientists are understandably outraged. By @michaelgreshko

Absolutely horrific decision and an inditement on so many levels. Years of work down the drain and many of us made career choices specifically predicated on this being a key mission in the roadmap to the Moon.
After a comprehensive review, we are discontinuing development of our VIPER (Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover) project. We are committed to studying and exploring the Moon, and will pursue other methods to accomplish many of VIPER's goals: https://t.co/oMyngdoUKc

A potentially interesting signal from yesterday's New York/New Jersey meteor! Recorded on a @raspishake in NJ. Timing fits, infrasound waveform looks like a potential boom from atmospheric entry?

Exclusive: Staff at the University of Oxford have voted by a narrow margin to overturn the removal of its ÂŁ75 graduate application fee, which was due to be scrapped from September https://t.co/x6ke4YU4Ml 1/4

@space_quakes @UniofOxford @chrislintott @MikeVolc @AJR_group @AMaddenNadeau @__tamsin @RebeccaC13 sadly a very close in person vote was lost by 142 votes to 138. We need 50 signatures from members of congregation to secure a postal vote. Given how close the in person vote was and the large number of academics tied up in exam processes we will press for this.

Turns out @UniofOxford will be voting next week on rolling back the abolition of the graduate application fee. Very disappointed - but we will fight it! Reminded of this awesome group of individuals from the 2020 vote.

@seismo_koel @space_quakes As someone who is not an academic in the University but tries to pay attention; my concern is that the original motion was put in good faith and attempted to give sufficient time to allow mitigation; that good faith feels rather used here with such an 11th hour intervention

FML really?! Theyâve had five years to plan for this. SO ANGRY.
It seems @UniofOxford will now vote on whether to U-turn the success achieved by @MikeVolc and @space_quakes re: the abolition of the graduate fees. Is there already a counter-proposal? It seems odd to request this at the 11th hour, right before enacting the policy.

This is rather chilling. Not the way one hopes that advisory boards would see their members treated.
