#SickleCellAwarenessMonth The education continues… Fact 8: A fever may be the first sign of an infection or other life-threatening, SCD-related complication, such as acute chest syndrome. Many hospital visits are due to fever alone because of the associated risks.

#SickleCellAwareness fact 7: Toddlers can experience painful swelling in the hands & feet, often along with a fever. This is caused by sickled cells getting stuck in the blood vessels & blocking blood flow in the small bones of these extremities.

September is #SickleCellAwarenessMonth! Fact 1: #SickleCellDisease (SCD) is a #blooddisorder involving #hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen. In SCD, abnormal red blood cells become hard & sticky & die early. This leads to a constant shortage of red blood cells.
