We've got a new show! It's about voice, AI, and what it'll feel like to live in a world where most of what you hear is not real. I have learned so many terrifying and bewildering and hilarious things from @ev_rat (and his replicas) working on this, and we're just getting started.
15 years ago I tried to vanish, in an experiment to explore the role of tech in privacy and surveillance. Older and not-wiser, I'm back with a sequel. This time, I replicated myself, and set my AI replicas loose in the world. The podcast is called Shell Game. Ep 1, out now.

Jazzed to close out 2024 with Shell Game among the year's best from Apple, The Guardian, The Information, The Economist, The Atlantic, Vulture, Podcast Review, & others. Thanks to everyone who listened from @sophbridges @scootes and myself, excited to take it new places in '25.

BREAKING: a memo leaked to the LA times shows the @CityAttorneyLA improperly pushed LAPD to bring charges against PCC organizer Ricci Sergienko for allegedly protesting outside the AIPAC president’s house. Hydee Feldstein Soto is so fucking corrupt. Read: https://t.co/bEuWoPZOMo
LA CITY ATTORNEY TARGETING ACTIVISTS 🚨🚨 @CityAttorneyLA directed head of criminal branch to prosecute an activist who protested outside an Israeli lobbyist’s house. Lawyer said no & then Hydee started to spy on her. Hydee then pressed LAPD to take action against the activist

very sweet to be editor’s choice at @ApplePodcasts on this, the week of our penultimate episode! this time we let @ev_rat’s voice double try its hand at some of the grunt work of making a podcast (no spoilers but we did still make the podcast ourselves) https://t.co/RcyVpGvfEZ

2023 was about getting comfortable with the word "boyfriend." 2024 is about getting comfortable with the word "podcaster"

to my horror, i had to learn that there's a solution to "what if i want to listen to drafts of episodes on a walk" that's not "text them to yourself and save them to voice notes" from this (charming) interview with a person i exchange episode drafts with literally every day!
The always wired-in @pierce had some kind words about Shell Game in The Verge's Installer this week, and provided me the opportunity to discuss my love of moss gardening and container ship spotting:

The bots may be coming for all our jobs (you’ll have to listen to find out)— but indie media is not dead yet! We love our subscribers, paid or otherwise, and we love all likes, reviews, and word-of-mouth recommendations! Thanks for listening ❣️
You can find it in all your podcast apps. It's home base is https://t.co/b39GZJ5fzk, where you can subscribe & support the show, which is FULLY INDEPENDENT. No secret backers, no corporate ties. Just me and the brilliant @sophbridges & @scootes, having fun making audio for you.

to put this into perspective, you could pay a full year of the salaries of every unit member @pineapplemedia laid off in the last year with JUST the severance package the lowest exec would get... and you'd still have money left over!
Meanwhile, @Audacy's executive severance packages include a minimum of 12 months of full salary, plus their annual bonus. The least well paid of these executives would walk away with ~ $1.15 million in severance. And CEO @DavidJFieldAUD would leave with ~ $4.7 million.

i hate to quote tweet like "IMPORTANT THREAD!!!!!" but i think this is an IMPORTANT THREAD
The Pineapple Street Union is incredibly close to finishing our first contract, a goal which @AudacyCorp claims to share. Yet instead of working with us, this week Audacy decided to go back on the amount of severance they were previously offering us.

thoughts? feelings? uncontrollable desires? we want to hear it all!! call today!
With Longform ending, keeping the replacement rate of podcasts at 1 with a new show... and I could use your help! It's about AI (yes, yes, but maybe not what you think, details soon), and I'm collecting 5-10 minute-or-less opinions for it. Details 👇👇👇, share away please.

The severance this union was able to secure for me literally kept me in my home this spring. I don’t know where I’d be without it, and I can’t fathom a world in which @pineapplemedia is ok leaving producers’ lives hanging in the balance. This is a cruel tactic— fair contract now!
.@audacycorp keeps telling us they want to close the deal but in the middle of bargaining they suddenly took back our previously agreed upon severance proposal. Retweet to put the pressure on @WBJenna @jd_crowley @pineapplemedia @Audacy
