The German nuclear phaseout may have caused up to thousands of excess deaths annually according to several studies. It’s no secret that the phaseout was a disaster. But when you start digging into the real-world consequences, that’s when reality really hits. Over the past

Germany could have gotten rid of coal by 2023 if it hadn't shut down its nuclear power plants. The German nuclear phaseout (Atomausstieg) was decided in 2002, with the first plants shutting down in 2003 and 2005. After the Fukushima disaster in 2011, the process was accelerated.

Also recently the EU's new Hydrogen Delegated Act was put forward, explicitly recognizing nuclear-derived hydrogen as a valid low-carbon source. It proposes that hydrogen produced using electricity from nuclear power may count toward EU decarbonization targets. 6/7

Jørgensen positive statement comes after the release of the PINC. The report estimates that investments between €199 to €282 billion are needed by 2050. Such investments could expand Europe's nuclear capacity significantly, from 98 GW today to 144 GW in 2050. 5/7

Had Germany phased out coal power plants instead of nuclear plants while expanding wind and solar power, they could have avoided emitting hundreds of millions of tonnes of CO2 and air pollutants, which have resulted in thousands of excess deaths over the last decade. 4/4.

In this photo you see one of the three lignite coal mines in western Germany, which together span an area of 105 square kilometers. They're visible from space with the naked eye and are larger than the entire city of Copenhagen. 3/4

Today, Germany has installed 180 GW of wind and solar power, 15 times more than Denmark. Yet, in the first quarter of 2025 alone, Germany burned ~35 million tonnes of coal worth 50 TWh of electricity. Why?.⚛️ Shut down 30 GW of nuclear.📉 Wind speeds lower than expected.2/4

Germany's Lignite Coal Mines Are Bigger Than the City of Copenhagen!. In 2023, Germany shut down its last nuclear power plants and burned approximately 145 million tonnes of coal. That's equivalent to around 3,000 soccer fields filled with coal, stacked 7 meters high. 1/4
