The money is coming from updating these sites to more modern tools. But if you can't understand the original code, you can't update it. Since the overall number of programmers that can do that is decreasing, their salaries are increasing. I get 100K/yr to update Java to Python.

While PHP is slowly fading away, it is STILL relevant and powerful language for web applications.
It will be few years before JS will replace PHP (if ever).
And absolutely you can STILL make money in WordPress dev.

I keep saying, and I'll say it again. If you want to freelance to gain some development experience, WordPress is the easiest way to get an opportunity right away. It's not a glamorous programming language, but you need experience to even get a chance in tech.

I got paid $1000 one time just to fix a date picker jquery conflict in a WordPress site.
I don't think it's a good platform, but if you can work with it, you can still make a lot of money because so many people use it
