On the other hand you could work with a company that can give you mentorship. This is of course ideal in my opinion and how you can learn the most. I was in both situations and I learned in the first month working with two senior developers more than 6 months being the only dev.

On one hand you're just starting out and the opportunities are limited. There's a big chance that you can learn a lot having to figure everything out for yourself. But then there's a pressure of delivering. It really is a sink or swim situation.

A person I know who's learning to code got offered an opportunity to work with someone where they are the only developer. It's really a double edged sword situation. Here's why:.

One kind of app I think every web developer should try building is a Chrome extension. Choose something that you do every day on your browser that an extension could make easier. It teaches you about how the web works and something that can make you proud that you use everyday.

I spent a lot of time working with Ruby on Rails for the last few months. It has a lot of nuances like any other framework/language but learning with ChatGPT made things so much easier. Everything that it suggested, I got a great explanation into why and other alternatives

I think no-code tools did take away jobs to some extent. For example I think WordPress really changed things. The old way was hiring a web admin to do any change on your website for you. But then interactions on websites got really complex and you still needed people to fix it.

The most disappointing part about getting my degree:. Not a single job has asked to see it in 11 years. I'm starting to think that they don't care about it.

The worst type of problems in coding are ones to do with your environment. You could spend hours trying to fix a setup issue, meanwhile you haven't written a single line of code yet. Over the years, things have gotten way better though and tools like Docker are a lifesaver.

Why am I such a paranoid developer?. Because "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.". Any line of code you write today, can come back to haunt you tomorrow. And it could live in that codebase longer than you.

I just hit over 11 years of experience now as a software engineer. I've seen the good side and bad side of building software. I've seen a lot of libraries and frameworks come and go. But I'm still amazed about how much free snacks or lunch still excite me.

The end of the year can be a great time for refactoring and tackling Tech debt in your codebase. Take the time to make your system more resilient to whatever 2024 throws at you.

If you're learning to code while having a fulltime job, your biggest challenge is managing your time!. Adding an additional 10 to 20 hours a week for a few months on top of a 40 hour work week is Not Easy. Be strict about your Focus Time and scheduling your learning.
