Sam Westmoreland was more than a football player. He was a music lover, a random flag buyer and the one friends always leaned on.
But behind the smile and the long blonde hair was a kid struggling. He was 18 when he committed suicide on Oct. 19:
Statement from former President Donald Trump on Mike Leach:
"Mike Leach was an incredible Patriot and Coach, with a big heart for our Country and for Football. From the very beginning, Mike was on Team MAGA, because he believed in our Great American Dream..."
A text Chris Parson sent fellow recruits:
“We are literally the last class that Coach Leach ever recruited. We are the last guys that he wanted to join his program. We should wear that as a badge of honor.”
I have a feeling Parson will be liked in Starkville.
Mike Leach asked on the SEC teleconference how he would grade officiating this season. Leach calls it a ridiculous question and adds:
"You go ahead a mail me a check. I think $30,000 will cover it. You go ahead an mail me the check, and I'll give you one heck of an answer."
Helio Castroneves told the Terzini family and friends he’d be back to celebrate if he won the
#Indy500
(it’s on his Instagram page).
Well, he’s a man of his word. Special surprise 24 hours after Helio picked up his fourth Indy 500 win:
Let me just add this. At it's core, college football is built off young athletes.
In the last year, Mississippi State dealt with the loss of former receivers coach Dave Nichol. Then dealt with the loss of teammate Sam Westmoreland. Now it's dealing with the loss of Mike Leach.
Will Rogers battling emotions after what could be his last game at MSU:
"Would've been so easy for us to quit after everything we've been through on and off the field. People can say a lot of things about us, but we're not quitters."
With no way to anticipate this, Mississippi State did a first-class job in organizing today's memorial service for Mike Leach.
From the college football legends sitting on the court to the fans in the stands, Leach's life was properly celebrated today.
The last seven plays of Mike Leach’s career were registered as runs, which is a beautiful irony.
However, the last pass he called was fittingly a 22-yard touchdown.
Rob Phinisee has taken a ton of criticism from so many (myself included) because he was the point guard of an offense schemed by an awful coach. He fielded every question from the media with class.
If this doesn’t make you smile, you don’t love college sports.
Asked Mike Leach yesterday how his team handled the emotions of last night’s win. His answer included the return of “fat little girlfriends.”

Mike Leach told reporters today his thoughts on players opting out of bowl games: "They think they're gonna have a storied, 10-year NFL career. Then they can't play one more college game. Well, that's ridiculous... It's one of the biggest absurdities that I've seen."
Looking at the flight trackers right now, there are an abundance of private jets flying into Starkville within the next few hours. I imagine it'll be a strong turnout by the college football community at Mike Leach's memorial today.
If one thing has been made clear, it's that Mike Leach means a lot to college football and beyond.
Nick Saban said it well: "Mike's infectious personality and passion for the game have impacted the sport in so many positive ways during his career."
"...something he lived, and helped others to achieve for themselves. My deepest condolences to his wife Sharon, and family. Coach Mike Leach will be missed by us all."
Didn’t get a chance to watch IU-Iowa tonight, so I pulled up a two-minute clip posted on YouTube.
Nine of the 14 highlights were of Iowa. And IU won this game by how much? If we’re gonna cover women’s basketball, let’s do it right — it was a matchup of two ranked teams.
Chris Lemonis: "I stepped into this program and Jake Mangum was here. God, he hated these guys. A guy like Dakota just carries that on. Tanner Allen wasn't from Mississippi, but he did not like Ole Miss. There's a rivalry piece here with those guys."
Best night for Mississippi State athletics since?
Basketball upsets No. 5 Tennessee to advance to the SEC tournament semifinals
Baseball defeats No. 2 LSU to open conference play
Chris Jans: "I'll always remember this group for their belief, for their buy in, for their coachability... It'll always be my first group at Mississippi State."
Sam Purcell says a text thread of SEC coaches starting blowing up before MSU's game, encouraging Purcell to set the tone for the conference in the NCAA Tournament.
Not many updates since this. He was airlifted to Jackson, so the severity of the situation is apparent.
You’re taught not to root for the teams you cover. But, man, do I hope Mike wins this one.
Not much information other than saying Mike Leach has been transferred to UMMC in Jackson. Certainly a serious situation. Prayers up for Mike Leach.
Zach Arnett will serve as interim head coach.
Dakota Jordan on the interactions with LSU’s dugout: “Just ignore them. They were saying some wild stuff. Especially when I was running back to the dugout. I don’t think I can repeat those words. I just had to be the bigger guy and just move past it.”
Mississippi State takes down LSU, and Lauren Park-Lane leads a celebration into the stands.
For a nationally televised contest, can’t overstate the magnitude of this moment for Sam Purcell.
Former Ole Miss QB Matt Corral on why he came to the NFL combine despite not throwing this week: “Teams needed to know I understand the game of football.”
Chris Lemonis on Johnny Long:
"He was crushed. You have a kid, he plays with a lot of edge. Probably hasn't played in this emotional of an environment as much. Just got the best of him. He is such a wonderful kid and such a great addition to our team."
Paraphrasing Mike Leach here, who admitted he might get in trouble for this:
Instead of playing hard and getting a first down... some guys were sitting under a tree and drinking lemonade with their fat little girlfriends.
Mississippi State has hired Sam Purcell on the women's side, Chris Jans on the men's side and has renovations at Humphrey Coliseum on the way. This is a big moment for John Cohen and the athletic department in building MSU's brand of basketball. These hires are crucial.
Chris Jans: "I know (fans) wanted more. I certainly wanted more. Our players wanted more. But we'll have perspective here real soon, and I think we'll all be proud of the accomplishments that this team had and the season that we had, and hopefully it'll help us going forward."
Mike Leach’s final game was an Egg Bowl win in Oxford.
It’s hard to forget how wild the postgame celebration was. Leach described it in a way only he could. A legend.
Lebby in the official release: "This is a special place with special people and a football program with a storied tradition. I couldn't be more thrilled to add our dynamic offensive scheme to an NFL powerhouse with a nationally regarded history of elite defensive play."
Tolu Smith: "Me, and Mook and a lot of guys have been here a long time. We want to make an impact on this program. Make an impact on ourselves and our family. We wear Mississippi State on our chest with a lot of pride. I think that's what's getting us through."
Chris Lemonis on his radio show:
When Dylan Crews was intentionally walked, Tommy White stared down Lemonis as he stepped up to the box. Lemonis smiled at him and signaled the second intentional walk.
Jett Johnson:
"It's been an honor and a privilege to play beside him. He's one of the best linebackers to ever come through here, if not the best. I say it all the time, I'll be sitting on the couch watching him play in the NFL telling my kids I got to play beside him."
Bookie Watson now with 138 tackles this season. Jett Johnson up to 129.
Next-best mark in the SEC is 102, that being from South Carolina's Debo Williams.
Can't blame Watson and Johnson for MSU's shortcomings.
Zach Arnett earlier tonight on Mississippi State football’s weekly radio show:
“I’m all for this university breaking the trend of getting rid of D coordinators every couple years. That doesn’t seem like a good formula.”

Mississippi State athletic director Larry Templeton got a call from SEC commissioner Roy Kramer 20 years ago.
Kramer said he’d been in talks with the White House. They wanted MSU to host the first college football game since the 9/11 attacks.
