Taiwan informal settlement in Site C has been devastated by a fire. Over 60 homes destroyed this evening due to the blaze and strong winds. The community is in dire need of humanitarian aid and building materials. Please contact: Sibusiso Madlankomo - 069 227 4837 @CityofCT

The SJC is disturbed that informal settlements in Khayelitsha are neglected due to Ithalomso Waste Management's unpaid workers withdrawing from cleaning. This health risk affects many. The @CityofCT, you must act why have funds not been provided? #WeNeedAnswers

Oh, our dear Parliamentarians are fully aware that South African streets aren't safe. That's why they send VIP protection for ministers and keep that budget intact, while happily cutting funds for police in communities. Priorities, right? #SafetyFirst #EquitablePoliceResouces

South Africans want to be safe, they want police vehicles at police stations. Politicians are not more important than citizens. My remarks during the debate on Budget Vote 21, 24 and 28 (Police).   #RISEInParliament #ForThePeopleByThePeople

Oh, brilliant move! Why on earth wouldn't you hand over crowd control to a private security company with zero training in handling protests or public gatherings? I mean, what could possibly go wrong with untrained personnel managing potentially volatile situations?

This should not be happening. Privatisation of crowd control function? No.

Until policing in poor, working-class communities and the Cape Flats is prioritized, as recommended by the Khayelitsha Commission, we will continue to witness such horrific incidents and loss of life. The time for action is now. #Khayelitsha #EndGunViolence #JusticeForAll

Incidents of this nature rarely occur in affluent areas such as Rondebosch and Sea Point, where there is extensive surveillance and private security, along with SAPS presence. Criminals in these areas are swiftly apprehended, or at the very least, the police have leads to follow.

The SJC has also called for the deployment of more experienced police personnel to #Khayelitsha. It is disheartening to see that these measures have not been implemented, despite the urgency and clear need.

The recent mass shootings in #Khayelitsha are senseless and tragic. These deaths could have been prevented. The Social Justice Coalition (SJC) has long been advocating for CCTV cameras and increased police visibility in the area.
