Also maybe some opportunity with trains is to make it about the journey and not just the destination. I LOVE planes but airlines are sardine packaging with wings. Trains have a way to add benefits to the journey that driving and flying doesn't have but they compete on speed only

Whenever we go to Ottawa we drive as it is much cheaper. I would rather take the train and hire a car just for the time there. But it is prohibitively expensive. They are working on a high speed rail now which will be more expensive. Rail should be a car alternative but its not.

Interesting idea from @rorysutherland on travel vouchers for what was car registration here in Canada. I would use them for sure. I would like to see cheaper rail however as from Toronto to Ottawa is almost touching on flying prices.
