Correction: the Left Party is actually the biggest party among 18-24 year old voters. Together with the AfD, they attracted 46% of this group. By contrast, the Greens polled just 12% of the youth vote.

Worth noting that, at 84%, turnout is unusually high: clearly #BTW25 mobilised voters like few recent elections (5/5).

Key question will be whether FDP and BSW are in the next Bundestag - will they get the 5% necessary? As others have rightly noted, that will determine the coalition options - with important implications for Europe (4/5).

The big winners are the AfD, who are now the largest party amongst younger voters, and (to a lesser extent) the Left Party, who a few months ago looked to be on the ropes (3/5).

CDU/CSU looks unlikely to reach 30%, which will temper the obvious satisfaction at having won. The SPD's result is its worst-ever at federal level. The Greens lost, but less than the other two parties in the previous coalition (2/5).

Universities are ‘asking how much research they can afford to do’ thanks to the crisis in their funding. Great to speak to @ParveenYaqoob, @Rachel_Hewitt_, @simon_green and others about this issue.

My tip for the next government? We might well see another CDU/CSU-SPD coalition (albeit without participation of Scholz) under Chancellor Merz; this would not of course be a 'Grand Coalition' unless the SPD somehow manages to become the second-largest party (9/9).

In short, #Germany is entering a period of political uncertainty lasting several months, with important implications for EU and foreign policy (notably Ukraine) (8/9).

Currently on 17%, the far right AfD could become the second-largest party, so this election is a huge opportunity for them. Will the CDU/CSU's firewall hold given that the two parties may well have a parliamentary majority? (7/9).
