@XavierT_ATC This would be as far from the game as I’d want to stray unless I had a very narrow, specific purpose. For example, I use medball shooting to enhance the coordination of lower & upper body in shooting development. Very far from the game; very narrow purpose https://t.co/155KkYwrvX

@XavierT_ATC Depends on my purpose for an activity. I want the purpose to be as game-like as possible. The cones below are not game-like in any way, but the contested layup is. It’s also from having only a half-court for practice & I like curved running for development https://t.co/yAMEamBMJ3

Drills solve a problem. What shooting problem are you trying to solve? Design your drill around the problem. Otherwise, stick as close to the game as possible.

Even better example than yesterday re: manipulating starts to create a variety of finishing situations. Also love the perimeter shot - it was the "right" decision and the drill allows it rather than forcing players into finishes at the rim every rep...
Great drill from @JonatanFolke. Here with Malbas BC U21 team. I tried it 30 minutes later with 10-year-olds, and it worked just as well.

✅ "3v3 achieves the same or better levels of physical activity, increases ball contacts, shot attempts & includes every skill used in 5v5 game" ✅ "age-appropriate basket height & ball size improves spacing, presents more driving lanes & improves shooting percentages" 👏👏👏

Good example of creating some uncertainty and variability based on how a drill starts (don't know if you're going to be on offense or defense) - small detail but can be significant. However, should there be more variability in attacker-defender distances, angles & speed?

What is Periodization? We do it in so many other areas of our lives, but the idea is relatively new to Shooting Development. In this thread I'm going to explain why it can help players and teams practice more effectively. Check out my research paper:

Really impressed by @CoachDrewD who, like @brianmccormick before him, has taken the time to dive deep into research/theory, combined it with his basketball experience and come up with a core set of principles that guide his approach... #elegantsimplicity

Players sign up to play basketball, to shoot, to dribble, to score, not to run the offense, stand in the corner, or stand close to the basket and rebound for their teammates. Everyone should feel engaged. https://t.co/p9qIO2ivek can help.

“What looks like consistency in a great shooter is actually stability through variability.”
Coaches: If you’ve ever said “we’re just trying to build muscle memory”… this blog is for you. Let’s retire that phrase—and replace it with something backed by science and used by elite performers, and let it better shape our coaching. Read here 👉 https://t.co/69hkTkaWAt

Sleep extension improved basketball performance. "Shooting accuracy improved, with free throw percentage increasing by 9% and 3-point field goal percentage increasing by 9.2% (P < 0.001)." - @drcherimah It's not just reps or practice hours. https://t.co/crTClaSuOd

The smart money knows sleep is better than a few extra fatigued reps. Quality > quantity. Practice at 6 A.M. isn't any better, and likely is worse, than practice at 6 P.M. #FakeFundamentals

Improving shot selection is great & improves shooting percentages & performance, but it's not improving your shot. Eliminating hard &/or bad shots is the easiest way to improve performance, but ultimately the best shooters improve ability to make a greater variety of shots.
