Last fall, my now 100-year-old great aunt mailed me an envelope that sent me on a journey through the life of my cousin, Jeffrey Bomser, who died of AIDS-related causes in 1989 six months after the death of his brother Larry and two days after I was born.

To the professional journos I've engaged with the past few days: I'm a journalist, not a source. I have lots of DMs from journos asking what I saw at CCNY yesterday but few replies from editors who want to pay for my work.

What gets me f*cked up is that fact that these "nontraditional media forms" are not new kinds of media! TikTok news anchors literally make our stories their video backgrounds Social media's profit model is using our work and not to paying us for it. It's a rip-off engine.

W/ the end of COVID child care funding near, we thought hard about how we wanted to tell this story. We settled on showing the fallout of a closure on 1 center, 1 community, 1 group of parents. The projections are 70,000 closures in the next few months. https://t.co/fXkh3HptII

As many as 70,000 child care centers are projected to close in the next several months as pandemic-era federal funding ends, pushing an industry already in crisis to a breaking point.

Please read the story that’s been 30+ years in the making, taught me the real meaning of fomo, humbled me to filth about the specialness of my own story—and gave me a sisterhood I never knew I needed so much https://t.co/CVQZJnTVp0

This is why we MUST support our local news outlets!!! Riveting story with so many twists and details. And photos! Perfect headline, perfect length (LONG) — just a phenomenal job all around:

New by me —> Alden Global Capital makes for a better Hollywood villain — but the scale of local news destruction in Gannett's markets is simply astonishing. Staff size is down 59% in 4 years. At its biggest local papers, paid readers are down 77%. https://t.co/XgnYdMTa3h

It might not be as mustache-twirling a villain as Alden Global Capital, but its enormous scale has meant enormous losses for local journalism.

The US is seeing an unprecedented wave of migrant child labor right now. Thousands of kids are working overnight in dangerous factories for brands like Cheerios, Fruit of the Loom and Ford. They're here alone and they're being failed in the most basic way. https://t.co/5IlCNTjGdh

Arriving in record numbers, they’re ending up in dangerous jobs that violate child labor laws — including in factories that make products for well-known brands like Cheetos and Fruit of the Loom.
