I was exactly 35 when I quit my job in November 2017, and I turned 36 in December. I opened Game Maker for the first time when I was 25. My dad (who drew all Ringo and Arrest animations) started to learn pixel art at 58. So I believe it's never too old.

6 years ago (31.10.2017) was my last day at “normal” work. I bet my career (not that successful but still on was a stable manager’s job in a large government department) to pursue my dream as a game developer. I was making the games as a hobby since 2006.

When I was releasing the game 5.5 years ago, I never thought it'd be the best investment I made (I never did any before though...) God bless Steam, Valve and Gaben himself for making many indies all around the world to live their dreams! Thanks to all players who left a review!

The most demotivating thing about the release was that this action still was "nothing special" to the majority of players. I don't really know where they've seen something like this though. So now I'm paralyzed when it comes do developing action.

My favorite part in development is making action gameplay. I don't like to work on ideas, structure, story etc. too much actually. But working on action gameplay is a pure joy. Too bad that 2d action (especially beat'em ups) is a doomed genre, but I'll continue to explore it.

I almost finished with everything I wanted to add. I think I need only 1-2 weeks more, so maybe by November I'll be ready to start a new game finally. I could have added more, of course, but since the game didn't quite interest players - I'm done with it. It was fun to make it.

My main issue with game dev is that in has no end or rest points. When you finish one game, you just start to make a new one. Release hype is one week at best, and mostly you just fix bugs. And when you finish - nobody already cares about the game.

Sea of Stars won Golden Joystick, and probably will win TGA, and IndiePlay as well (I'm going to Shanghai to see this in person). And I got sad, like, of course, I won't win. But then suddenly I realized that I'm competing with the best indie game in the world on the same stage.

Some sad news: 1) Artem got burned out. Even after 1 year break, he still hasn't any interest in drawing, so he's skipping my current project. 2) Ueda M. has to draw everything now, but it turned out that drawing isn't all fun for artists, they struggle much.

Once again I have this dilemma, I need some things to be not that fun for narrative reasons, but players won't get it again. And again I wish I had the audience who eager to see my experiments. Funny thing that as a player I want it to be just fun, no more than that.

It was the best release in terms of sales, and the worst in terms of motivation. Even failure of Arrest didn't demotivate me as much as this game. Trying to find a new workflow to continue. Something broke in me at the beginning of the year after all. Something is not the same.

Knowing that there's nothing behind a release is actually frightening. Somehow I see now, that the whole gamedev activity is hollow. There's nothing concrete, it has no core to hold on to. And while I cherish the process, the question "why should I make games" suddenly arose.

We have to at least double (or even triple) up our screen resolution to match current pixel art games. It will raise work time and funds, of course. It could be tough for 2 artists as well. So now I'm thinking if I need to level up my game or to stay in the comfortable zone.

There's a secret why multi-task devs are harder to burn out. Cause you can switch between tasks. When you just program, or write texts, sooner or later you'll get tired of it. And thankfully I can enjoy routine tasks as well, so I can relax filling the table with coordinates.

Players think that they're developers bosses because they bought the game. And they can demand something. The only obligation a dev has is a bug free game. Everything else is devs choice and will. Developers are grateful to players, and players should be grateful for the games.
