While EPS and the City continue to paint encampments as violent, I want to share a few stories from my time in outreach. We take a trauma and harm reduction approach and understand that a large number of encampment residents are Indigenous. 🧵

You may think encampments are unnecessary, but until you see or experience what poverty looks and feels like, you may not understand. Encampments are a lifeline of mutual aid for a community with few resources. Living houseless is brutal, violent, and can be debilitating. 6/17

Unhoused folks ask for help. Govt says go to the shelter. They go to the day shelter but it’s not operating. Maybe they seek out an encampment. Within days the encampment is displaced by police. They are told to go back to shelter. It’s closed. The cycle continues. #yegcc

On top of dealing with a Shigella outbreak, the community is constantly disrupted by the City and @edmontonpolice . The unhoused community will gather in what the City describes as "encampments." This dehumanized word does not do justice to how encampments keep people alive. 5/17

Much of the 'social disorder' that EPS continues to talk about comes from a place of trauma and literal fear of death. More police make the broader population 'feel better' while never actually addressing the systemic issues of poverty. Discourse seems to be concerned...

2 years ago at the vet, a distraught woman walked in. Her tent was swept, belongings gone. She had nowhere to turn. There was no notice, no support packing, and outreach teams unaware. Housing waitlists stretch for months. What we, progressives, demand is human rights. #Yegcc

Just helped stop a women outside our house who was stumbling down the street being followed by another concerned neighbour. They had found her asleep in the alley. Frostbite covering her finger, dazed and confused. An ambulance was arriving.

about broken property but not about the people surviving (and in some cases dying) right next to a multi-billion-dollar hockey facility. Violence towards property? What about the violence we inflict on people daily by forcing them to sleep outside. #ableg #yegcc

There is no doubt in my mind that she would of died if this neighbour didn’t find her. It’s -22. We need housing now. More people will die in the meantime. Enough political games. #ableg #abpoli #yegcc

@JasonNixonAB Homeless people are PEOPLE. Your attempt to scare Albertans is failing because we know the truth - our unhoused neighbours need support and services, not jail and alienation.

@JanisIrwin Campus sexual violence? Still not being taken seriously by @demetriosnAB . Actions speak louder than words. Absolutely disheartening.

@AFPAElliott @drduniapetunia @YEGMayorOffice @CityofEdmonton Didnt the Communications Officer say say a “retweet is not a endorsement of opinion” to cover for @DMMcFee ’s blunder? Okay lmao. Glad to see the police continue to make their own rules (sarcasm). #yeg #yegcc

The @edmontonpolice negotiated with the camp and agreed to let residents keep their tents. The next day they came back, assaulted witnesses, put out the ceremonial fire, and arrested Indigenous people BECAUSE it was -30???? Where EPS goes, violence follows. #yegcc #yeg

Between COVID-19, the drug poisoning crisis, the rise of hate, the spread of disinformation... it is exhausting. Many lost lives to suicide over the last few weeks. I'm exhausted. Ironically, these days I am often finding a sense of peace at Pride Corner. #YEG 🧵
