At minimum, GLP-1 drugs should be used in consultation with a physician and alongside a behavior change program with remote patient monitoring to ensure that patients change lifestyles for the better rather than create a dangerous loop of eat, inject, repeat.

Clearly, drugs are (and should) be a first-line therapy for some, but for the vast majority of patients, there are many more options that are available before moving to drugs.

Unfortunately, clinical trials for drugs are rarely long enough to elucidate these long-term effects. And in today's day and age of telemedicine, millions of people can get drugs delivered to their homes after just a 15-minute virtual visit with a doctor.

We have been down this road before. In the 1990s, "fen-phen" grew in popularity as a new, miracle weight loss drug but it soon became clear that long-term use could lead to heart valve damage.

Just this morning, reporting from @Jane_Herz discussed a recent paper that describes a 3.5X higher incidence of small bowel obstruction in patients using GLP-1 drugs.

But as is often the case with weight loss, there is no such thing as a single, magic bullet. As use of these drugs have increased, serious side effects have been reported, especially after longer-term use.

GLP-1 drugs have been in the headlines with celebrities and social media influencers touting them as miracle drugs.
