Even if Europe does everything it can to prevent people from fleeing: Every person arriving shows that the border regime is vulnerable! After days at sea, the survivors arrived in Ortona - welcomed by civil society with banners, open arms and solidarity 🫶

It would be easy to disembark all survivors safely on the island. Instead, Sea-Watch 5 is forced to sail 3 more days to Ortona with all remaining people. We asked to change port, Rome refused. The disregard to international law is shocking but no surprise. Shame on you, Europe!

We stand in solidarity with the crew of @SOSMedIntl. After being shot at by Libyan militias, they are now denied disembarkation. We demand their immediate landing and send them strength as they process these traumatic events.

4days after the Libyan CG attack, our crew is still stranded onboard due to lengthy and unorthodox health protocols. Their #mentalhealth is impacted: they are in the same site of the traumatic event.Immediate support and disembarkation are urgently needed.

After 20 days of unjust administrative detention, Seabird 1 is back in the air. While NGOs are criminalized and Libyan militia vessels —donated by Italy— threaten and shoot at rescuers, civil society does not stop. We resume our monitoring with Seabird 1!

Europe continues its game with human lives. Last night, we embarked 65 people from distress on board the Sea-Watch 5. Several people – including 2 pregnant women, one close to labor, and children – needed medical evacuation with the helicopter to Lampedusa.

@SOSMedIntl @GermanyDiplo NO ONE should need to be reminded to respect human life. This was a deliberate attack on people seeking protection — and on everyone who refuses to let them drown. Europe is complicit!.

@SOSMedIntl The boat from which the militias fired was not only EU-funded but also delivered by Italy in 2023. Yet instead of taking responsibility, the EU and Italy remain silent. When asked, @GermanyDiplo stated they “regularly remind Libya to act humanely.”.

After Italian authorities reassigned us to the port of Vibo Valentia, the 100 survivors were finally able to go ashore in Italy yesterday. Their struggle for freedom continues, but yesterday was a step toward safety and dignity. We send strength and solidarity for the days ahead.

Through @alarm_phone hotline, we also learned of another boat in distress. Our Seabird crew spotted the people from the air. With Aurora, we stabilized the boat until the Italian coastguard finally fulfilled its duty and rescued the people on board.
