Even if Europe does everything it can to prevent people from fleeing: Every person arriving shows that the border regime is vulnerable! After days at sea, the survivors arrived in Ortona - welcomed by civil society with banners, open arms and solidarity 🫶
It would be easy to disembark all survivors safely on the island. Instead, Sea-Watch 5 is forced to sail 3 more days to Ortona with all remaining people. We asked to change port, Rome refused. The disregard to international law is shocking but no surprise. Shame on you, Europe!

Within one week @boat_spotting's Trotamar III was detained after armed threats, EU-funded militias opened fire on #OceanViking, and @RescueMed’s ship was blocked in Trapani. Together with @PVolontaires & @HPISwiss: From the air to the sea – Solidarity!

We stand in solidarity with the crew of @SOSMedIntl. After being shot at by Libyan militias, they are now denied disembarkation. We demand their immediate landing and send them strength as they process these traumatic events.
4days after the Libyan CG attack, our crew is still stranded onboard due to lengthy and unorthodox health protocols. Their #mentalhealth is impacted: they are in the same site of the traumatic event.Immediate support and disembarkation are urgently needed.

@SOSMedIntl @GermanyDiplo NO ONE should need to be reminded to respect human life. This was a deliberate attack on people seeking protection — and on everyone who refuses to let them drown. Europe is complicit!.

@SOSMedIntl The boat from which the militias fired was not only EU-funded but also delivered by Italy in 2023. Yet instead of taking responsibility, the EU and Italy remain silent. When asked, @GermanyDiplo stated they “regularly remind Libya to act humanely.”.

Hundreds of shots were fired at the #OceanViking by the so-called Libyan Coast Guard ––EU-funded militias. This new escalation in violence against people seeking safety must end now. We stand with the @SOSMedIntl crew and the survivors onboard.
Today at 3pm, the #OceanViking has been deliberately and violently attacked in intl. waters by the Libyan Coast Guard, who fired hundreds of shots at our ship. The 87 survivors and crew on board were not wounded. We are currently working on a detailed reconstruction of events.

After Italian authorities reassigned us to the port of Vibo Valentia, the 100 survivors were finally able to go ashore in Italy yesterday. Their struggle for freedom continues, but yesterday was a step toward safety and dignity. We send strength and solidarity for the days ahead.
This morning at dawn, we rescued 100 people from distress at sea from 2 boats with our Sea-Watch 5. Now, we are on our way to the port of Catania, Sicily. It could be so simple to provide safe passage, but instead, the EU creates deadly journeys for people fleeing to safety

Through @alarm_phone hotline, we also learned of another boat in distress. Our Seabird crew spotted the people from the air. With Aurora, we stabilized the boat until the Italian coastguard finally fulfilled its duty and rescued the people on board.

Last night, 30 people were able to disembark safely in Lampedusa. During the night from Saturday to Sunday, we rescued the people with our Aurora after @alarm_phone had informed us about the distress case. For several hours, we searched for them in the darkness.
