I'm convinced the number one most important trait for founders is psychotic levels of persistence.

San Francisco is so productive because:. 1. It's not nice enough outside to feel the urge to frolic. 2. It's not cold enough outside to feel the urge to snuggle up by a fire.

On one hand, we need to romanticize it a bit so smart people take the plunge to make the world better,. On the other hand, the reality is it's an insane thing for insane people.

The romanticization of being a startup founder is kind of insane to me:. โ€“ Youโ€™re statistically unlikely to succeed.โ€“ Youโ€™ll have no life and be totally consumed.- Incredible lows.โ€“ Youโ€™re locking yourself in for 10+ years. This is insanely hard and NOT for everyone.

This type of user-hostile platform lockdown only works in consumer. Enterprises will pay a lot of money for platforms, but they actually have to be functional as platforms. Locking the API turns Slack into just another app. Slack is writing their obituary.

The new @SlackHQ API rate limits are absolutely insane:. For accessing messages, you can now only make 1 request per minute, with a maximum of 15 messages ๐Ÿคฏ. And yes this applies to ALL apps, not just public ones. We can't build internal tools on our OWN data. @Benioff this is.

A sovereign nation is nothing without the industrial means to support itself. We have a long journey to reestablishing our self-sufficiency around national security and @HadrianInc is showing how it can be done. Congrats Chris and team.

Fun fact of the day: . Only 7% of China's population are members of the CCP. The world's largest "Communist" nation is actually ruled by an exclusionary, elite minority group.

It's why the "Why Now" question in venture is so important. Ideas that seem bad in the immediate term can, in fact, be brilliant due to a recent change in the landscape. Though, more often than not, the predicted change either fails to materialize or does so differently.

Some decry the excesses of venture capital as wasteful. Dumb ideas get funded, money gets wasted, experiments get hyped but fail. That's all true, but it's also extremely valuable. The cost of long-run resilience is short-run waste.

In this sense, relatively unregulated market-driven capitalism is near guaranteed to be in a weird state of suboptimality. There will be many extant mutations that are burning capital towards their ultimate demise. But thats a feature not a bug.

This is why top-down economies can thrive in the short run but collapse in the long run. They can more effectively exploit the fitness landscape as it is today. But lack an engine for broad economic experimentation.

Most mutations are maladaptive. But the absence of mutation is a guarantee of long-term susceptibility to black swan events.

Contrarianism is the mutation mechanism of the economy. Mimeses is the selection mechanism. Can't have just one.

Hype is a debt with a very high interest rate. Like all forms of leverage, you can use it to go very fast. But you either live up to it immediately or crash and burn.

At an early stage startup, founders' one lever for shaping culture is to hire people that already embody the values they want. The way they operate in the field with customers, build the product, and work with each other ultimately becomes the culture.
