This was a super fun initiative & I'm so glad the current @OceanWiseSeafd team made it a reality โจ๐ฃ Really hope the RAPSTA results shed more light on why robust, current fishery data and knowledge *are critical* for determining sustainable seafood recommendations ๐คท๐ = ๐ซโ

RAPSTA was developed by Dr. Laurenne Schiller, @savetheocean, in collaboration with Ocean Wise Seafoodโs Science Lead Samantha Renshaw. It pairs rigorous data from the @SeafoodWatch and the @OceanaCAN 2022 Fishery Audit. Read more here: https://t.co/zIvFAXBiSn

Proud of this one & hope it will encourage others to consider new ways of looking at (& assessing) international ๐ฃ relationships. Personal note: this paper wouldโve been half baked w/o the inclusion of expert knowledge & I am sincerely grateful to all my interviewees ๐๐ผ๐
New research: Despite seafood companies dominating Pacific Ocean tuna fishery negotiations since 2005, outnumbering govt policymakers on 50% of the 10 largest delegations, mgmt of tuna #fisheries has improved @savetheocean @g_auld @QHanich @fishgovernance: https://t.co/KuSkALNpDr

Latest PhD paper out in @cjfas - in the context of the modernized Fisheries Act, we explore where the 'evidence' for evidence-based fisheries management comes from and who is involved along the way ๐

From this we conclude: Current company involvement in meetings is not negatively affecting negotiation decisions & may even help ensure sustainable tuna fisheries in this region when agendas are aligned. - ๐๐๐ - Co-authors: @fishgovernance & @g_auld & @QHanich

All tropical tuna stocks in this region are currently healthy & management of tuna fisheries improved during the study period. In this regard, our findings support past research highlighting the critical role of #PacificIsland states in pushing for stronger management measures.

(4) Since 2014, only 15 companies (from the US & Asia) accounted for >40% of corporate representation. (5) Their ties to delegations appear indicative of historical business relationships or emerging #sustainableseafood partnerships.

(3) Industry composition varies widely by delegation - in general, bigger delegations (& bigger fishing nations) have more industry reps present. Communication between industry reps & policymakers also varies widely by delegation: some have good relationships, others less so.

I recently learned about plans to re-zone the Purcells Cove Backlands for future development. Everyone in #Halifax can currently access & enjoy this wilderness. That would change if this goes through. Take 2 min to sign: https://t.co/WQjxdYbHGa

In 2012, we started investigating power in the seafood industry. During 2015, we invited CEOs of major companies to a global dialogue about the future ocean. Today, we publish a paper https://t.co/TnGGOYdD6D on what we have learnt so far #SeaBOS #Sustainability #SDGs #OpenAccess

I just canโt stop smiling about these fish! ๐๐ง๐ ๐บ๐ณ For all we know about our impact on many marine creatures, it never fails to amaze me how little we still know about their lives. And how much we may never know if our current relationship with nature doesnโt improve fast.
Together with @Miasjien @seafloorella and a host of other researchers, we have just published a paper on the biggest fish nest colony discovered anywhere to date , under the antarctic ice! https://t.co/J6mHdziBKS
