Such a shame about Christopher Priest. I loved his books. He was kind enough to let me make an illustration for my 'Fantastic Travel Destinations' series of designs - the first writer I approached and very supportive. A splendid set of books, and considered writing on fiction too.

I very, very infrequently leave the warmth of the RV Polarstern icebreaker for long. I dont mind sketching the ice physicists and ice biologists doing, ohh, i dont know what.

The underside of arctic ice can be covered with thick algae. When the ice melts, the algae sinks to the seafloor, becoming a useful dinner for deep sea animals, such as these happy sea cucumbers.

On our research vessels the technicians are generally 'as equally' (err, far more!) important as us scientists. Here Axel does some sort of magic, turning wires and metal into something useful.

During our recent PS138 expedition to the high Arctic I managed to squeeze in time to make a number of illustrations of the unusual areas of seafloor visited. Here, at 2000 m depth, we see many filter feeding sponges far below the ice.

We are recently back from a fantastic cruise to the Central Arctic (RV Polarstern, PS138). Here is a stunning photo taken with our towed camera system of a cirrate octopus, at 2000 m , adjacent to the Gakkel Ridge ultraslow spreading ridge. A beauty!!!

Check out what we found in the deep Southern Ocean. Several animal carcasses including a penguin and a baleen whale! These "food falls" provide chunks of energy to the deep-sea. Thank you @seabedbiologist @griffiths_huw Craig Smith and Henk-Jan Hoving.

A big thank you too to the @driftnoise team for assisting in predicting where the ice would be drifting during the HK19 Kronprins Hakon expedition, during which we managed to collect the OFOBS acoustic and image data!.

Flowers for Algernon such a great book, when he knows what is coming, it is awful. I also loved the BBC Radio 4 version with Tom Courtney, still available in full on YouTube. .
