Our findings confirm the additive risk hypothesis, particularly through the maternal lineage. Neglect by both maternal grandparents and parents amplifies the risk of mental health issues. No significant effect was found for paternal grandparents.

This study explores how neglect by both maternal and paternal grandparents can affect their grandchildren’s mental health in adulthood (Depression). We tested the additive risk hypothesis using data from the Tromsø Study.
