A bit late but… happy to share my recent paper “Survey of complex organic molecules in starless and pre-stellar cores in the Perseus molecular cloud” has been published in MNRAS @RAS_Journals ☁️📡🧪 !! A summary below 👇 (1/9). You can check it out here -

Finally, our main result is that we’ve at least doubled the number of complex organic molecule detections in cold cores! And similarities in abundances across all stages of star formation show there is a limited amount of chemical reprocessing as stars and planets evolve ✨🪐 !

Comparing the sample abundances, one interesting finding is the non correlation of the molecules CH3OH and CH3CN… perhaps strange because these molecules are in fact correlated in warmer protostars… 👀 this gives insight into formation processes!

We detect a lot more complex molecules! And perform radiative transfer analyses to measure the amount of these molecules along our line of sight - or rather their column densities and abundances (please see our large appendix if interested in the details!)

Eager to hunt for more molecules… I then used the Yebes 40m telescope (which I just visited!) to carry out a complementary molecular line survey (at different wavelengths) toward the sub-sample of 15 starless and pre-stellar cores where CH3CHO was detected with the ARO 12m…

Additionally, within Perseus, the cores with CH3CHO detected tend to be located in regions with increased star ⭐️ formation activity as well as an increased number of protostars whose chemical composition is also complex …

Now, compared to the starless and pre-stellar cores I previously surveyed in the nearby Taurus Molecular Cloud (see , it was found that the more distant Perseus Molecular Cloud is just as prevalent- if not more so - in these complex molecules…

We first surveyed 35 dense starless and pre-stellar cores (objects likely to go on to form stars like our Sun as well as solar systems like our own) in the Perseus Molecular Cloud with the ARO 12m radio telescope - finding a prevalence of the complex molecules CH3OH and CH3CHO!
