In a city of 8 million, every person you pass on a park bench contains a hidden opera. I recently dug into one of those New York stories, and what I learned stunned me. Thread below -- and story here:

Modeled after the HBO drama "Succession," CNN's terrific new docuseries, "The Murdochs," tracks Rupert Murdoch’s rise to power and uncertain legacy.

Welcome to The Run Up! . In our first episode, we talked to voters about the fragile state of democracy. And this time, it's abt more than Joe Biden or Donald Trump or any individual. It's the political system itself.

In my story about Chinatown, the McDonald's fish sandwich figured prominently. It turns out to be a very resonant sandwich! Here's a lovely ode to the meal from Jane Hu in @NYTmag .

RIP Francis X. Clines, a @nytimes reporter, columnist and foreign correspondent who was one of the greatest of his generation. Young reporters, including me, worshipped Frank. We all hoped that one day, our writing could be half as good as his was.

Here’s a nonpaywalled link to the story. You can read it or listen to me read it, with a short intro explaining the backstory.

Mo and Tin's friendship raises questions about redemption. Can a friendship make up for your worst mistakes? I think about that a lot. I think about Mo and Tin a lot. Here's my story. Linger on the photos by @Anrizzy, too.

A world opened up, filled with secrets, shame and desperation. What stood out most, though, was Mo and Tin's friendship. News doesn't often focus on friendship. But it matters a lot. The pandemic highlighted that for many people, and the response to the story underscores that.

He opened up bit by bit. We spoke often and he guided me around his New York. Chinatown groceries, quiet parks, favorite benches. I began digging and reporting around the edges — court records, immigration forms, police reports, old photos. Lawyers and aid workers were invaluable.

He had a lot to say about Mo. But I became just as interested in Tin himself. He was a storyteller, and our first conversation lasted for hours. I was drawn to him. But he was a puzzle to me. I didn't understand him. There was something more.
