Lipophilic statins such as simvastatin result in a significant decrease in mtDNA. Interestingly, vitamin D supplementation prevents the depletion of mtDNA. Maybe this is because vitamin D upregulates the biosynthesis of CoQ10, and also has antioxidant properties.
