“Councils need to look again at these proposals. Wholesale district merging is not the answer for Peterborough – we need to look at the broader picture around how we construct new councils that work for everyone.”.

“There are rightly discussions ongoing about whether, and how, the boundaries of Peterborough expand as part of local government reorganisation. There can be benefits to large authorities, but they must reflect shared local identities and be based around coherent areas.

“We’re a proud city with a strong history, and merging our council wholesale with neighbouring authorities risks taking the focus away from Peterborough’s issues, as well as damaging local services both here and in Cambridgeshire more broadly.

Up to 5,980 children will be eligible for free school meals in North West Cambridgeshire - putting £500 a year back into parents’ pockets, easing the pressure, and giving kids the best chance to succeed. This is Labour’s Plan for Change in action.

No child should struggle to learn because they’re hungry. That’s why I’m proud that our Labour Government is expanding free school meals to over half a million more children and lifting 100,000 children out of poverty.

It’s a big step towards fairer, greener, more reliable transport - and a system that puts passengers first. I’ll keep pushing for better buses for our communities, and for a network that works for all of us.

Too many people across North West Cambridgeshire are stuck with unreliable, expensive bus services - or no service at all. I look forward to voting for Labour’s Bus Services Bill today. It gives local areas the power to take back control of routes, fares and timetables.
