@big_business_
I love college football. And not cause I have one team I blindly follow. I love the imperfections it has. Some players will become future Hall of Famers while others will work at Enterprise Car Rental. Wild swings happen every game lol
2 years ago today I was having surgery for colon cancer. 2 years later I’m having the most success of my career. Just wanted to both share and give perspective on the concept of "time". A lot can happen in 1 year and even more in 2. Just continue to show up for yourself
1 year ago today I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. 1 year later I'm healthy and cancer free. I share this to give perspective on you don't know what can happen in a year. Just try and show up for yourself everyday and know things can turnaround sooner than u think
I know people gate keep their connections and relationships. I've always been willing to share my connections and introduce people to each other in hopes they do great things together. If you really care about the arts & the artists then helping people connect should be a goal
I want to see more emerging producers do whole EP/LPs with emerging artists who are independent. Stop worrying about getting paid per beat. Split the master but more importantly hone your skill. The artist and producer will both benefit from the experience
This is something I have been working on for months and am so excited its about to be released. "The King Of Crenshaw" is an ESPN/The Undefeated 30 for 30 Podcast series with original music form Mars and Rance
@1500orNOTHIN
So this past Saturday was my official 1 year anniversary from being cancer free. I spent the day taking my youngest daughter to see her favorite musical “Hamilton”. When it’s all said and done it’s those memories that will matter more than anything else
People often talk about they need a team. But instead of going to look for people keep creating your product and service and your success will attract the authentic team you truly want. People are attracted to success and moment and will want to get involved
the most famous rapper of all time is from Long Beach, CA. And people have the nerve to say new artists from LA are "too West Coast"? the math ain't mathin
I had my 18 year old daughter with me last night for a couple of Grammy parties. She was completely unimpressed and wonder why people just stand around trying to have conversation over insanely loud music. I love how sensible she is already lol
although society frowns upon such behavior I think there are some ppl that would be better off by getting punched in the mouth. Social media has created an environment where ppl don't believe their actions and words have consequence
last night I had a great convo with my 16 year old daughter. We talked about the song "Wap". She loves it btw which I assumed she would. But it allowed me to open up to her and talk about when I was her age I listened to Snoop, Too Short, Quik, to name a few
commitment to your idea(s) is more important that the creativity of your idea(s). People can be successful with a basic idea that they fully commit to while others who have creative ideas but give up on sustaining the effort end up without much to show for it
I know a lot of people don’t believe in having a plan b when going after your goals. That’s fine but allow yourself to be open to the pivot or redirection of your plan A. There are many paths to your goals. Be open to them all
I tell young ppl in their 20s who want to work on the biz side of a creative industry to not worry about having specific role or title. Just do dope shit with dope ppl and repeat those experiences as much as possible. You'll find your true gifts and talents in doing that
Artists make sure you value and take care of your recording engineer, mix engineer and graphic artist. They only get paid once for their work but like the music their work will continue to live forever. So appreciate them and their value to your music
young producers who are looking to sample 90's R&B make sure you go beyond the singles of that era. There are some gems that were real album cuts that you could flip and have great success
my 2021 was pretty damn good. Beat Stage 3 Cancer and immediately launched
@westcoastcontv
starring 2 black women.
@HomeGrownRadio
had a successful year as the night show on 92.3. I also ended the year picking up new clients to manage.
thinking about hosting a Clubhouse Room where I do a Q/A on the current state of the LA Music Biz cause you niggas are lost and being misguided by other lost niggas
I also believe in investing in people and helping them become great. It's benefitted me in so many ways over the years. I proactively help people be great within the role or job they have so they can advance and reach their full professional potential
Congrats to
@GinaViews
for graduating college today. She worked a corporate job, pursued her dreams and kept up her GPA the whole time. One thing Gina is gonna do is GET IT DONE!
If you ever ask me for advice in regards to your career know that everything I say to you will be rooted in hard work and showing up for yourself. I have no cheat codes or ideas to cut the line. Real success is gonna come from you’re own work ethic and dedication to yourself
in the last 2 weeks
@GinaViews
has hosted a stage at the Revolt Summit, attended the BET Hip Hop Awards while walking the red carpet and appearing on the telecast and just dropped her 1st produced cypher with her idol
@RealSway
. She's no longer next. She's arrived!!
for every idea you come up with make sure you also consider the operations and logistics of the idea. A great idea will fall apart amongst poor execution
btw a local artist here in LA went viral this morning for all the wrong reasons. This is why I tell people to think about their posts. Your social media is your 1st publicist. When u post something negative ask yourself who does this serve?
it's time to start acknowledging that
@DJRTistic
is an elite DJ. He literally can rock a set anywhere in the country. Its time we start putting him in that class
Moments like this are truly priceless.
@DJHed
and myself were there to support
@kalanfrfr
on his successful tour and he gave us our flowers unexpectedly. S/O to the whole
#FCETeam
I don't know if this works for anyone else but I will often go back and listen to albums that were the soundtrack of my life in my teens. They reignite my passion and inspiration to continue in this biz
I'm not a fan of out of town artist talking shit about LA. LA is the epicenter of the entire entertainment industry. Don't come here pillaging our resources (as
@DJHed
would say) to then talk shit about the amazing city that changes ppls lives.
Most ppl know I go to a lot of events in the city. I have noticed ones thrown by industry LA transplants don't usually have any LA bred artists and/or producers. Events thrown by LA industry natives have a ton of LA bred artists and/or producers.
artists like Larry June, Payroll Giovanni, Curren$y and Dom Kennedy give a unique musical aesthetic from the cities they're from. Their sonics aren't usually typical of where they're from but yet still feel authentic to the local culture
A boy slid into My 15 year old daughters DMs. She found out he’s 19 and said she’s not interested. He said “age ain’t nothing but a number”. She said “well jail ain’t nothin but a facility” lmfao
J Prince sent out one social media post about the severity of this situation. Niggas wanted to get tough on twitter and talk shit about him not being relevant in NY and shit and look what happened.
first time I met Quik he was working on what later became "Rhythm-AL-Ism in the studio. He wanted to play us this new album from his new artist that hadn't been released yet. He then puts it on and the 1st song played is "Why U Bullshittin" and my mind was BLOWN
Kalan.FrFr performed on DJ Hed's Kicksperience stage and the Co-President of RocNation was in the crowd and watched him perform. Months later he was signed with them
Stage presence is very important and will take you very far. You never know who’s watching and listening. It could be somebody in the crowd who might take u on a tour or have u open for a big show simply because u have a great performance. Rehearse your songs, learn them.
we often downplay and diminish how difficult our roads and journeys have been. A lot of times we were just trying to survive those moments. But its ok to take time and reflect on those moments and give yourself credit for persevering and staying true to yourself
for every LA artist who's had an issue with LA Radio look at what
@BLXST
has done. Took a couple of years and flooded us with music w/ artists. Then dropped is own project & ran up the streams that led to 1 of the stations to jump out on the record. Now he has both playing him
I will never speak on beef and social media beef at that. But I will say nobody should ever purposely or inadvertently slander or misrepresent the legacy and cultural impact of Combat Jack.
over the last couple of years I have been bringing my oldest daughter to the studio when I work with my artists. She loves music. Last night while working on a song she had some ideas for lyrics. I told her to present them to the artist who loved them and her reference of them…
I miss the days of Roc A Wear, Phat Farm, Sean John where artists used they're influence to start their own brands and we as consumers went and bought and supported those brands
people use to always ask me why I don't drink when I'm out working. What happened at the W is literally the reason. Being from LA and having a mix of niggas in the same environment can get tricky and shit can go left at any moment. So I stay alert and keep my head on a swivel
artists why do u get mad when DJs don't play your records but you actually never sent them the record or dj pack? DJs shouldn't be having to rip your song off of YouTube to support you
when your peers and admires bestow great things on you and you feel uncomfortable receiving them know that you are denying your blessings and destiny. Run towards your greatness. Run towards your destiny and show gratitude to those that see you during your journey
a piece of advice I will be handing out all year is to be intentional in every aspect of your life. Be intentional with your words audibly and written. Be intentional with your plans/goals. Hold yourself accountable about your own intentions
the men of this industry must provide safe environments for the women who work in it and we should always protect women at all costs. Anything less than that is just unacceptable
I’m at the studio where Victory Lap was created watching the Tidal concert with the niggas who produced the album. Niggas having a great time reliving the good times and shit. Now this is therapeutic
Starting to realize that I’ve been creating a community of really good people who happen to be in the entertainment business. There’s always been the stigma that people in entertainment are inherently shady. But the people I know, work with and support are great people
one thing I'm gonna do if I see you out at an event is introduce you to somebody you don't already know who can help benefit you in your career someway
when people say the music is "too West Coast" its them actually saying we don't know how to market this and make it global cause nobody here is from LA
over the past several weeks I have heard some music industry people use a phrase called "too West Coast" in describing an artist signed that is indeed from LA. I am deeply offended by the phrase. The world loves West Coast culture and take from us all the time
