A Black Vietnam vet once told me that black soldiers used to tell each other to "stay woke" b/c some of the white American soldiers that they were supposed to be fighting alongside would try to shoot them too. I didn't think to look it up then (I was a kid) but...
Hennessy was one of if not the only liquor brand that included Black people back in the day. It started in around WWII. French people would give Black soldiers Hennessy, a French Cognac, as a thank you for their service.
That story has haunted me for years. Recently, filmmaker
@byronhurt
posted this clip from Kamau Bell on IG that mentions that the first documented use goes further back than 'Nam. Blues man Lead Belly recorded a warning in his song "Scottsboro Boys."
The Scottsboro Boys were a group of about 9 black boys rounded up and falsely accused of r*ping 2 ww. You can look it up if not familiar, but you already know how that went. The lyrics are:
"I advise everybody, be a little careful … best stay woke, keep their eyes open."
Ok, this needs to be a thread. Black Twitter (with southern roots): Are you familiar with fried fish and spaghetti with a piece of bread on the side as a meal? If so, there are your people from? Please RT.
So, it was embraced by Black people early on. There's more but that's the short if it. I know this because I was almost hired by Hennessy to write a historical project about the brand's legacy in Black History.
Another early use case I found was from novelist William Melon Kelley. He wrote about white beatniks appropriating AAVE in a 1962 New York Times Magazine article titled, "If You're Woke You Dig It."
Fast forward to the hip-hop era. Obviously, early hip-hop was a form of a Civil Rights Movement, a freedom movement, (those may not be the right words but I hope you get it). So, that tradition of embracing Hennessy was passed on from the forefathers and mothers.
Black womanists been put y’all on the the theory that this is what black men like him want for themselves and y’all attacked them. He’s finally saying it out loud.
So wait, we're doing this with Michael Jai White? Like, now that people finally discovered he's a god level martial artist, we're finally giving him folklore status the way folks do Chuck Norris? Because if so, it's past time! Let's go! 🤣
My friend, a black woman, told me she had a heart attack at 34...and didn't even know what was happening. She said she woke up not feeling well but thought it would pass so she went about her day as usual until the feeling of malaise got worse.

Regina Davis was a Black Panther, she was the only high ranking female leader they had, and was severely beaten and put in the hospital by men BPs for questioning their authority, then pushed out of the party. This is detailed in Elaine Brown’s book, “A Taste of Power.”
One thing that’s missing from shows about NYC is NYC-native input. We see shit differently than transplants. Like, transplants tend to have a mystified view of the city and you can tell in the writing and scenarios that play out.
That girl musta caught her man looking at Ashley Graham's IG or something. Hell, maybe she was looking and is actually jealous of what she sees but can't process. 😂😂😭
I’m coming out as a Harry Styles fan. I was indifferent before but I listened to some of his music after that manly men situation and now I’m seeing his IG troll. I like. And if you don’t, you can debate your mom.
I see the typical anti-black rhetoric floating around about "Look what we do to our own people" and I have to say, there are Black-led organizations run by activists who are in a variety of communities working to mitigate gun violence.
Listen, professional dancers have it really hard in this business. A lot of y'all's favorite artists treat them like trash. But Missy is one of the few who treats them like human beings. So the fact that she shouted out the dance community is huge!
But stress can be a doozy. And she had an infant...and daily life stress. More than half of pregnancy-associated heart attacks happen in the postpartum period.
She finally went to the doctor and thankfully found a good one (a black man who listened to her). They ran all the tests and discovered she was mid heart attack and may not have made it if she waited any longer.
One thing about Lil Kim, she don't bother nobody til they bother her. She doesn't insert herself in stuff either. Just be minding her iconic ass business.
There are a lot of Black celebrities who don't show love to the few good Black publications that exist. And their yt publicists definitely gate keep too. Half the time, the latter don't even know any Black pubs at all.
Honestly, I think Whoopi jumping in and Joy getting quiet saved Megan's ass. That type of silence from Joy was definitely the result of rage telling her to go the fuck off, but also logic making her think about the pros of just being still.
Proof of vaccine with regard to passports already exists. For example, you need proof of yellow fever to get into some countries. God people are annoying when they discover something that’s new to them but not actually new.
I get why Monique is being cold about this. They keep trying to crucify her and ice her out when again, we’ve seen similar (or worse) cat fights on this franchise before. And again, it’s not like Monique stomped her out.

The reason I stay winning is because I'm relentless about being the absolute best at whatever I do — including being the best groupie for my wife & daughter.
I had no clue this was such a controversial pairing and that some soul food aficionados hadn't heard of this. But here's a good read from
@soulfoodscholar
. Very informative.
@michaelharriot
I’m gonna add Bel Biv Devoe. I went to see Dave Chapelle live a few years ago and the DJ played “Poison.” He turned the music down during THAT PART and the yt people there were silent. There is no way you know BBD but don’t know and involuntarily song the bridge in “Poison.”
Anyway, I think Jasmine married Silas because she was tired of being homeless. She liked him enough to tolerate him and figured fuck it, he's stable. But now she's regretting it.
Obviously, I don't know these folks but that's my theory and I'm ticking to it.

Is there a black food historian/sociologist/professor of something who can chime in on this? Now I think it's a Great Migration thing that may have been lost in translation.
Adding that it's not just yt publicists either. Sometimes blk publicists and creatives get it in their heads that they "d0nt w
@nT
t0 b3 p!g3Onh0led" and that appearing in a blk pub hinders growth. When it's usually actually the other way around.
They were worried about Meghan's baby being "dark." Uh, have they seen Meghan? Geezus white supremacists are fucking stupid. It's no wonder they have to rely on violence.
I'm serious. There are certain names in entertainment that dancers love working with. Missy, Beyonce, Janet. Okay, that's all y'all get. No more tea lol.
I'm so curious about this. I haven't eaten that in years but always just assumed it was a southern black thing. And now y'all black ass buzzards are telling me you've never heard of it either! 😂😂😂
But I gotta add, Lenny Kravitz has covered Essence and Uptown a time or too. That's what I can think of off top, so I don't know what this is about. Clicks? Rage-baiting? 🤷🏾♀️
Earlier today, I walked up to this woman who was selling cut up fruit (pineapples, mangos, papaya, watermelon, etc). As soon as I got to her cart she goes, "Hello, watermlon?" Now, I did want the watermelon but I was internally having a crisis...
These stories about Anthony Mackie "being rude" are amusing because when he lived in NYC, people would see him all the time, especially when he had his bar, wave and keep it moving. Sometimes might even be at the bar having casual convo but no one was pressed.
MORE: Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich, founders of Moms for Liberty, whose members campaign to sit on school boards, have been proactive in getting fiction books that discuss race and racism, slavery, sex and gender identity, banned from school shelves.

❤️❤️ (sorry for the grainy image, I had to move fast to take the pic).
@ShesSavvy
Yup. When I worked at a healthcare company I learned all about how for years studies were really only done on white men and that now they're learning how deadly heart complications can be for women too at disproportionate rates, especially black women.
Feels like people have literally learned nothing in this time of quarantine. Nothing about compassion, empathy. Nothing. It's just, let's go back to the way it was, full throttle. 🙄
You know what I hate? Family Youtubers who put all their business out there, most of it unnecessary stuff, but as soon as they get divorced they don't want to tell our nosey asses what happened.
